hey guys
i bought a bear mgc bali for about 40 bucks about and the handle broke in half , the handle just broke on my reg. routine with the bali nothing done that would make this happen. do you think that it is the terrible quality control reputation that them and jaguar have? One more question do you think this is also a rip off http://www.budkww.com/details.asp?productcode=B114 thanks for your help

That looks like the BEAR "tanto" bali. If you're a gambler, go for it. But as you have already seen, its chancy. You can get a really nice blade, like I did when I got my clip bali (And I believe at least one other person on the forums has mentioned getting a good one); or you can get screwed as you and Mykl (who has posted a thread on his troubles elswhere in the Bali forum) did. I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't seen both ends of the spectrum. Mykl's blade is literally half the thickness of mine, with numerous other flaws not even hinted at in mine, which was nearly half a year older--and thoroughly abused.

I swear by my Katya, but considering the odds, I don't think BEAR can be trusted enough to be worth it.

As my good archer friend already stated I too got a POS from Bear. His was exactly twice as thick as mine and was the same model (114D) and even bought from the same place. So now I just ordered a BM42a about 2 weeks ago and ordered a Jag to hold me over until I get that. I'll never buy Bear again.

Anxiously awaiting my BM 42A

Has anyone ever gotten a Bear, particularly the 9" black skeleton handles with a bowie blade, and was happy with it? I think the design looks good, especially the blade profile.

Yes, I do like the way the bears look but from what I've heard and seen(never have owned one) they sound worse than Jags or those little Rostfrei's. In my opinion it is a sad use of the Made in USA.

Things may never get better, but they can always get worse.

Hey guys i know that there isnt alot of quality to the bear balisong's but i dont have an extra 130 dollars for a benchmade 42 do you have any suggestions of what is of good quality for a balisong reasonably priced around 60 dollars? (p.s. dont be a smart guy and tell me to save my pennies and get a bm42 anyways)

Well, I'm not gonna be a smartass and tell you to save for a 42. What you REALLY want is to save up for a BM 45, now there's a balisong worth carrying.

Anyways, if you are going to buy anything short of a BM, you should probably just get yourself a Jag and stick with it till you can buy a decent piece to flip. Plus, there were some slightly used 42's for sale on here a couple days ago for 90-95.

alxdagr8, you sir, have hit the nail on the head. There are a lot of people (including myself) that would like a sort of middle of the road balisong, in that price range. Nicer than a jag and not as expensive as the 42 (I do have one and would recommend getting it). I think that a company (especially if it weren't BM) which was able to produce a bali in the $60 or so range would do excellent in the market.

Well, that was still kind of smart-assish to say

A 45 is usually *twice* as expensive, but it is a very nice knife. I like the 42 much better because of it's weight and abililty to adjust its tightness.

I have the exact same bear. I think it blows the jag away, much better quality. But I was probably lucky.

I don't think I have a pic of my 45 on my photopoint, but I'm sure if you look at one of the guys webpages there will be a pic of one. The 45 is an out of production BM with SS handles and a weehawk blade on it. That comment was meant as a joke, cause they usually run in the 200-250 range I believe. I personally like it better than the 42 due to the heavier handles on it, but others prefer the Ti handled 42 for it's lightness. Just a personal thing I guess, sorta stylistic.
