My dad was out doing some yardwork when these furry guys showed up. They were around just long enough for him to snap some pictures. The surprising thing about this is I live in suburban CT. My town's siting of bears has increased phenomenally in the last 5 years.

Potentially a very dangerous problem. The North East is seeing a huge growth in its wildlife numbers IMO...I see wild turkeys and beavers, bears and moose all the time now..(well, I hear about moose sightings, and see the sign) I think that the draconian gun laws and the drop in the number of hunters will cause a problem in the near future. JMHO. Gene

Agreed. I have relatives in upstate NY that own a dairy farm. Years ago you'd see small farms everywhere. Eventually the successful farmers would buy out the smaller farms 'til they'd have more than 1000 acres, hundreds of cows and only a handfull of people could run it. The drop in the number of farms and families that hunted has caused an explosion in the deer population.

Its not uncommon to see heards deer where you'd see just a couple at a time 20 years ago.

I agree, I have seen a large increase in some other species as well, mainly deer and turkeys. Luckily, despite human encroachment on animal lands, I have not heard a single report of a bear attack in my area.

Apparently, this is one of the reasons for the huge population growth of Lyme ticks.

The area we'll have our CT Gathering in has had quite an increase in Black Bear sightings. Hopefully we'll get lucky and see some! Just not too close...

I love bears. One of my favorite animals. Black bears are cool, but you have not lived until you've looked a Griz in the eye without a fence between you. Magnificent creatures.

Neat, but could be a problem - mom and two cubs = agressive

I am no bear expert, but I believe these cubs were born last year based on their size. I wonder if that makes the mother bear less protective. Anyone have some insight to share on this?

Sure - the smaller the little bearlets are, the more PMS'd she'll be! Once the little ones get less little, she'll calm down and ease on the protectiveness. But I still wouldn't annoy her. ;)

Bear sightings near human settlements are on the rise over here, too. From what I've seen, it's not because of less guns and less hunting, though - it's because people are spreading wider and wider, building more and more, and taking down the forests where mr. Bear is still supposed to live even though this is 2008 AD. We're setting up to work and live in these guys' living room, and wondering why we run into them more often than before. :D
