Beat the crap out of my Mule2

I happen to be quite fond of properly heat-treated D2...

Any potential for a D2 Mule?
Count me in on that one! I love the D2 on my Mili. But on the other hand I'd like to see some simpler steels, too. Maybe a steel which compares to Carbon V or even something simple as a O1? A 52100 kinda steel...just a thought.

Teacher stated:
Personally, I am in for whatever you make whenever you make them....

Though I will give an opinion on what I'd like to see I really am quite content with the thought of Sal doing the descision making based on what is available as far as Steel, and production resources. I'll have to agree with teacher here. Sal has done pretty darn well and I've benefited from his choices. I'm along for the ride whichever steels he uses, in whichever order they arrive. Joe

In regards to the next steel, there is already several production knives in S90V, and ZDP. I would like to save those steels for later, just because I'm a lot more interested in steels that haven't been put into a production knife yet.

Just a side note: Love my M4!

I heard some people tossing around the Super Blue option, along with that Chinese steel. Let's go as far out as you can, in terms of edge retention, etc. If it's not all that easy to sharpen, well.... grin and bear it. ;)

along with that Chinese steel

I believe Sal stated this was a new, or new to us steel not used before. If Sal thinks enough of it to make a mule out of it I'm looking foreward to working out this mule. I don't know the chemistry of it, which would at least tell me what kind of steel it is, but I'm ready for it, as well as the ZDP, and S90V mules.

I'd love to see the ZDP hardened a bit higher than the folders, and it can take it. This is, Imo, how to see what the steels are really capable of, and they don't need to have a toughness/not pushing it type heat like the folders need due to their use from everything from prying ( then complaining), to people cutting wires and nails with it (Vivi! :) ) If someone batons a muleteam through nails, sticks it in the wall, jumps on it and breaks it that's testing, not proof that spyderco maskes lousy knives.

Actually, Vivi is one of the best testers we have, nevertheless I'd love to see ZDP at RC66-67, to see what it's capable of.

S90V, it matters not so much if it's RC57 or 59-60. ( S110V might be different in that respect)

Sal, turbocharge ZDP for us....more than normal I mean. :o Joe

I know what it will be capable of. It will be capable of wearing out my diamond sharpening rods.

Sal, please, just make a super hard one for Joe, so he can spend a week reprofiling it.

the 3 steels mentioned are already in process.

What I'm lookoing for is the next 3 after the 3 mentioned. I need to begin chasing steel.

I'm gonna buy the shit out of a ZDP mule team

I would like to have a VG-10 Mule Team.
I don't know enough about steel to ask other steels, but the steels I don't want are: 440, 420, AUS8, and AUS6.

DWRW, that thumb ramp mod you did looks great! I don't feel the need to do it on my MTs, but it looks like it's a bit more comfortable than the original shape.

Good luck Jimbo, Joe

Wayne Goddard's knife testing. The original standardized, at home test. http://users.ameritech.net/knives/edge.htm
Note how high it ( vascowear) ranks against this abrasive medium.

Thanks Joe. :) I am guessing I bit off more than I should try to chew. My first blades are in 3V and CPM154, my oldest girl has my first 3V with a high edge to spine dimension and full flat "filed". Have two more to finish and 3 Santoukus in the 154. It is what helped push me to getting a real knife grinder. Sharpened at roughly 28/34 for bevels and is a real slicer. Be interesting to test.

You gave me some great insights and perhaps I should give some carbon steels a try such as the benchmarks like O-1 and the 10 series as you say. Am guessing learning won't be as expensive.

Didn't mean to go OT, back to the mule program, but perhaps Joe is on to something and a run of O-1 as an "old school" type reference steel and something like Vascowear, what steel was and what it can be. In addition to 3V. :D It'd be good to have a balance of some "out there" steels, as well as tool, carbon, and stainless types to investigate and try in the program.

Thanks again Sal. It is appreciated.

Jimbo, CPM 154 is very popular right now amongst knifemakers. 3V is without doubt a great steel too. If you haven't got a knife in it yet you are in for a treat.

We should start a dedicated thread for mule #6, 7, and 8. Joe

3V id say would sell well i rember it was second behind cpm m4 cpm 154 would be good to try out ive read lots of good things on it.A8 would also be intresting.

If those 3 are in the works, then I would love to see:

M2 at 66 HRC
1095 at 65 HRC
CPM 10V at 64 HRC

I really love my CPM M4 Mule. It came at tree-top trimming sharpness, and after over 20 ft. of heavy cardboard cutting, it still shaved arm hair with no pressure, and a couple of strokes on a ceramic stone, back to tree-top. Did I mention how impressed I am with this steel? :D

I too, would like to have a Mule in 1095.

My M4 Mule also arrived less sharp than my other Spyderco's. But the new diamond Spyderco stiks got it to 'Scary Sharp' now.

I'll put in a vote for super blue.

I'd be interested in Sandvik 13C26 run pretty hard or any of the really fine grained stainless steels.

I'd like to see that CPM M4 baton through that block of wood.
