Beat the Dead Horse - Bushcraft Knives

I think batoning is overrated. When you are out in the woods, all sorts and sizes of fuel is available. No reason to baton.

Notching is easier and much quicker using a baton. It's not used just for splitting firewood.
Try making a Mors Try Stick with and without the use of a baton.

Batoning come into its own when you are trying to survive in a rain storm. There are time you need to get to the center of the wood to find something dry enough to light/burn. Even more so if you discover your lighter doesn't work for whatever reason or you lost it.

Or you can use your hatchet/axe/tomahawk to do it a bit faster.

I've always found this method to be very awkward. It's also slower by a good margin than battoning with a knife IME and in the example you've shown. If you don't like battoning that's fine. It's not for everyone.

I didnt like this method at first also, but after a lot of practice, its now my main method of processing firewood. It gets pretty fun after youre used to it
