I'm looking for a sturdy chopper in a khukri-shape and I could really use some advice. I've never used a khuk-type blade before, so I would really prefer one wilth a more western type handle (not the usual polished rounded khukri handle). I mostly want this as a machete for woody southwestern brush/light forest, but heavier chopping ability would be appreciated. I've seen some possible candidates from Cold Steel and KaBar, so a good recommendation for either would decide me. If you can stay under $70, you get a chocolate-covered pretzel:D

also, one never knows when they might need to behead a horde of zombies on a budget, so shearing ability is nice:)

Botach has the Kershaw Outcast which is a really good knife if not quite a kukri shape. It's big enough to be a good chopper and the D2 steel makes it a great choice. At $60 it's quite a deal.

Where's my pretzel?

Aw, ya beat me. I was going to say an Outcast, and have the edge convexed by richard j. :(

Go to that page I posted on teh Botach site and look down below the Outcast listing, there should be a listing for a Cold Steel kukri. I have one and have had good success with them. Don't know anything about the Ka-Bar.

HI. Without a cho and sword of Shiva it's just a bent knife.;)

Frank

P.S. A khukuri shaped machete and a khukuri are going to be two very different animals. The 1/2" thick, convex edge/ sabre ground khukuri is not going to bind in wood like khukuri shaped machete. If you want a serious chopper, get the real deal. If you're going after lighter vegetation the bent knife will probably be just fine. If you get a rubber handled one, wear gloves or you'll get blisters.

A beater kukri huh? You can get one from Atlanta Cutlery made by Windlass. It will take a lot of work to get a good edge on it. Ontario has one at Brigade Quartermasters. Good American 1095 steel. Not overly thick, but a good chopper. Then there is the Cold Steel, now in SK-5, a good solid kukri. Or catch Yandu's Deal of the Day and get a good deal on a real Himalayan kukri over on the HI forum. They are not terribly expensive . I have used all of the above, and I like the Cold Steel and HI the best.

I have a Ka-Bar khuk. If I could go back in time I would get a HI. The Outcast would probably be a better value for the money than the Ka-Bar. My $0.02.

I have a Cold Steel and a Nepalese one from Khukuri House. The Cold Steel is fine, but it is hard as hell to get sharp: once you do, it's one hell of a chopper. The Nepalese one takes a much better edge (razor sharp) and is now my go to blade for home defense since we can't have guns here. My maternal grandma was Nepali and her family carried them in the army, so I had one made with her last name on the blade.

I picked up a villager WWII HI khuk for $65. Keep an eye in the Himalayan Imports forum and you can grab a REAL Khuk, high quality with great customer service for under $70.

I second the Khukuri House suggestion. They have several blades in this price range and their khuks are really nice working tools. I have the Survival type, tested it by chopping out a thuya in our garden - no problems, no edge damage, very solid performance. Delivery can be longish, but hey it comes straight fro Nepal!
