so this is really two questions in one. First,i have noticed I can get a good edge on my knives but the tip usually ends up rounded off, so it becomes tougher to puncture with the tip even though I can shave with the blade so I'm looking for advice there.

also I find myself in situations regularly where I eed some to open cans with no can opener, or do some heavy duty cutting that does not require a sharp edge, just a tough blade. I don't want to spend good money on a knife just to go slamming it through a can of spaghettios lol. I want to buy a gerber paraframe because I know it doesn't hold an edge long but seems durable enough to handle more "ouch" type of work that would damage my good knives. Would a gerber paraframe suit this role perfectly or is there a more durable knife for the same price I should be lookin at?

You could buy a twelve dollar Swiss Army Knife and then just always have a can opener for your spaghettios. :D

What are you sharpening with?

I doubt he meant he finds himself opening cans everyday though a multitool is a good suggestion I think he was more naming hard use tasks it might be used for, and I would still suggest coldsteel for a cheap knife, also the RAT-1 or Izula might be of interest. though if you want a knife built like a tank you might want to look into zero tolerance too though it is way more money.

Funny, I actually thought I had a pop top on my ghtteo's like the ghette and meatball's have. Well I had no can opener last Friday, so out came the BM Rukus. Worked great.

Just get something that won't fold on your fingers and is in your price range.

I would suggest a SAK, like the Tinker, for a can opening knife. Stabbing a can seems like a good way to hurt yourself, but maybe that's just me.

Gerber Paraframe is around $25. For this price there are other better options:
- CRKT Drifter
- Kershaw Nerve/Blitz
- Kershaw Oso Sweet
- Buck Vantage Select
- Byrd (any model)
- Last but not least: Victorinox Adventurer, comes with can opener, bottle opener, 3 screwdrivers, and an awl.

I regularly open cans of tuna with my folder. Nothing a little re-sharpening doesn't fix.

to answer that question I sharpen free hand. Always have. So any advice on tips regarding freehand methods will help. And yes I meant a knife for hard daily use not for strictly opening cans haha. And I was under the impression that crkt as suggested as a possible substitute was on the same level quality wise as gerber. Wrong impression?

I really don't understand opening cans with a folder when Vic's and other multi's are so cheap and up for the task. Not to mention the dozen other uses they hold.

If you are opening cans with a knife I don't think it matters which folder you choose, you'll also have problems with the tip being sharp.

reznik, the tip round problem is another subject related to sharpening. And it's not a can opener, it's a hard use knife. The can opening was an example.
