beater knife advice, and tip sharpening

to answer that question I sharpen free hand. Always have. So any advice on tips regarding freehand methods will help. And yes I meant a knife for hard daily use not for strictly opening cans haha. And I was under the impression that crkt as suggested as a possible substitute was on the same level quality wise as gerber. Wrong impression?
CRKT products are more consistent in their quality than Gerber's. Gerber Paraframe is made of mystery stainless steel, which can't be better than CRKT Drifter's 8Cr14MoV stainless steel comparable to AUS-8A and 440C.

reznik, the tip round problem is another subject related to sharpening. And it's not a can opener, it's a hard use knife. The can opening was an example.
If you're sharpening on benchstones, don't let the tip go over the edge of the stone. Stop your motion while the tip is still on the stone.
