I planned to go for a hike today but the weather was crappy and I had little energy.

However, this afternoon I had the urge to go play around with some knives. I wanted to practice my fire making in the rain.

I selected a log that has been rained on for the the past two days and went to work. I have only ever started one fire via fuzz sticks so I wanted more practice.

The only tools used:

Since the log is pretty big, start at an angle to get pieces off:

Using a wedge that broke off to split larger pieces:

Entire log split:

Make a fuzz stick from a dry center piece:

Get a spark to it and slow add larger pieces:

Here it is established and burning the biggest pieces. I could easily cook/build bigger from here:

I really like that Kephart. John's making me one just about like that. Should be ready about the first of Novemeber. I can't hardly wait.

Good to see one getting beat up. Now send me that firesteel and I`ll put a handle to match the knife on it!

I've got a couple blanks coming and might want to get some handle scales put on my HB. I may be sending ya a package soon.

That HB would look sweet in cocobolo to match the Keppy! All I have ever done is micarta on the HB, it`s time to fix that!

4 5/8"

It's 1/8" stock O1.

I like 4-5" blade for a main belt knife. Just big enough to baton and get good size pieces off. That is hard to do with a smaller blade.
