Looking for suggestions on configuring / ordering a Beaumont KMG.

First off, I'm not a knife maker. I am looking at a KMG for general use in a metal art & mini fab shop setting built around a CNC Plasma Table.

I have spent a great deal of time reading all about KMG style grinders & all the different makers, plans to make your own & accessories.

There are just so many options at Beaumont & so many accessories available it is somewhat confusing.

What I am thinking:

Beaumont KMG Variable Speed KMG-10
* 2 Horse Power motor
* spare tooling arm (steel)
* small wheel attachment
* what size small wheels? need suggestions
* 2" contact wheel as replacement of bottom idler wheel of platen attachment
* tool arm storage rack

Any suggestions that would make the grinder more versatile for general use and future knife making would be appreciated.

Personally, I don't use the SWA any more since I opted for a spindle sander; that said, I use 1/2, 3/4, 1 and 1 1/2 the most.

What exactly do you mean when you say spindle sander. Like a woodworkers spindle sander?

Steve, I modified (very slightly) a wood workers spindle sander which I use for choils and finger grooves in my knives. The only reason for this, was better dust control and keeping my material "square" when shaping handles. As you don't work much with blades, (had to go back and re read your post) it may differ entirely for you. Also, usa Knifemaker Supply offers small wheels if you decide that you need something else later down the line.

I'd rather have a small wheel attachment than a spindle sander, more choice in belt grits and longer lasting.

It's pretty common to setup a workrest to hold your parts square.

3/4" and 1" are the most common knifemaking small wheels as they fit the finger groove sizes.

if i read that right you want to know what smal wheel to get
i have a 1/2 inch rubber and a 1/4 steel wheel set and that covers most all i have to deal with

edit to add maybe its a 3/4 i l hav eot look tomorrow now

I agree with the count and would recommend the small wheel attachment for the reasons he mentioned. I opted for the 5/8" wheel when I got my KMG. I use a small length of angle iron as a "jig" bolted to the top of the tool arm (for 8" wheel) or to the top of the SWA, to place the tool rest in the vertical position. Just drill your holes in the angle a little over sized to allow some movement for squaring the rest to your wheels. Works like a charm.

Let me clarify, I was not recommending the spindle sander over a SWA. Never the less when I was using the SWA, it was in the same diameters as the spindle set up. As for my choice to use a spindle sander, I do so to allow a better flow of work and for dust collection purposes. I move from grinder to grinder rather than switching attachments. :-)

Might want to also take a look at the rotary platen. Works great for knocking off or rounding over sharp edges on metal.

Also works great in tapering metal.

Food for thought.

my only suggestion is to not buy a pheer grinder or you will regret it., that is if you ever receive it.

Heck, I don't even like the name . . . .

No it will be a decked out Beaumont KMG ( if they ever get past there back orders) . . . I'm too old to spend time building something to save $$$$ . . . I would rather spend time building something that makes $$$$ . . . You can only save $$$ once, you can make $$$ over and over . . .
