Beaumont KMG

You mean alternate from grinder to grinder with some sort of A/B switch sharing the VFD?

The KMG is a great grinder. Are there better machines out there, yes. I bought a Burr King at Blade Show and it is a Cadillac for sure, but it doesn't get used much. Its too finikey to change the accessories. I do love the small wheel feature on it better than the KMG. But they don't even sell a rotary platen, which is where I do most of my work. If I ever set up a home shop, it'll go there.

Here is where the KMG is a standout. You paid $2500 for this one. But if you wanted to add a 2nd you can do that for under a grand. Once you get used to running two machines simultaneously, its hard to beat. I have 4 KMG's on a bench, and I'm usually using two. Two more are being used by other folks. The Burr King generally sits unused. My total expenditure for all 4 KMG's was well under 6 grand. That is a lot of machine for the $. In addition, these machines get run ALL day. The only thing I've had to replace was the aluminum wheels and ocassionally, bearings.

I wish I had done this before I assembled mine. All top surfaces are covered in a thick, dusty layer of rust. It gets everywhere.

I've had my KMG for at least 8 years and it has no rust despite living in my garage in Houston with constant 75-100% humidity. It has a "beautiful" patina. I made a conscious decision not to paint it since I don't want to worry about touch-up in the future. Instead, I've wiped it down occasionally with a product made by Break Free. It is "Industrial PCL. It "protects equipment, Cleans and penetrates, Lubricates Longer". It's much like a higher viscosity BreakFree CLP product which is often used for cleaning and protecting guns. I highly recommend this to everyone.

Anyone have recommendations on what kind of paint to use to prevent rusting?

Paint is not needed to prevent rusting. If you wish to paint, then clean all surfaces with a petroleum-free solvent and then spray paint it with Rustoleum or a similar product.

No actually. I never bought a VFD setup with any of my KMG's, which makes them even more cost effective. I have the two grinders running full speed at the same time and bounce back and forth between them. Its $800 ish for a motor and chassis setup, so I'm well under two grand for two machines because of the no VFD.

My burr king does have a VFD, and I like it for doing small wheel stuff. Everything else I do full speed. NOW! When I was learning to grind, I slowed my grinder down. It slows down the mistakes.

My KMG is also about 8 years old and I never have painted it and barely ever wipe it down. There are a couple of tiny rust colored spots but the knives don't know the difference. From a Nick Wheeler thread I have used Rust-Oleum Hammered on some of my other creations and they came out great.

As to protective coating, I found a product called Synthetic EEZOX - Premium Gun Lubricant.

It doesn't smell good like Break Free Products.

I am assuming the Industrial Breakfree smells the same as the regular gun cleaning version.
