An experiment I did this weekend after being inspired by the glass platen earlier in this thread:
I took a small piece of angle aluminum, and epoxyed a piece of 1084 to it, and then a piece of pyroceram glass to the 1084.
I screwed it in to the rotary platen (There was already a tapped hole on it), and it worked pretty well! I was able to finish a ~2" wide flat ground blade without any heat problems running at 30-40% on my VFD.
Total cost: Around $10
