Beautiful guns, horriable knives

good points there hair.maybe it's just that we recognise quality equipment and cant always afford it.but it's logical,in the context of the title of this thread,to expect a guy who carries an expensive gun to use a quality knife.if the guy owns boats and planes and expensive cars and asks what is that knife for, then,in my opinion, that guy is an a-hole.i have had similar experiences.BUT if the guy is asking to educate himself that is a different story entirely.more power to the guy who can do it all with a $5 knife.

a friend of mine is like that. he spends thousands of dollars to go on guided hunts. owns a pack of corvettes yet uses dime store knives go figure

Hair, Wal Mart in the state might have all that really really nice stuff, but here in Cancada the knife section at Wal Mart SUCKS!!

I've never seen any Spyderco knives, and your lucky to see them have more then 2 or 3 different Bucks.

Ya know.. I'm an old fart.
I buy the very best of everything or I borrow what I can not afford !
I've had 50 ++ BBQ grills over the years and 3 years ago I bought me one for 3300 bucks !
Guess what ?
My grandaughter will have it when she is my age !
It made it through 4 hurricanes too !
Being a gunsmith, I understand what you guys are saying.
DO NOT BUY JUNK..

I sold guitars at my last job, they were mostly entry-level ones with a few nicer guitars. Time and time again parents would come in and ask me what guitar they should get for their kid and I told them that if the kid was the least bit serious about playing to go ahead and get the nicer guitar because they are easier to play and learn on. The cheap guitars were around $100 and the nicer ones were closer to $300. I don't know how many times people walked out with the cheap ones only to be back 2-3 months later for the nicer guitar.

If you're gonna stick with something get decent gear, you'll save money and frustration in the long run. If you just want cool looking sharp(ish) things to hang on the wall go ahead and get knives that look cool but are cheap. If you want a reliable knife for EDC, hunting, utility work, or anything remotely like hard use then go ahead and buy a name brand knife. You don't have to spend a ton of money on the knife, a Grip can be had for well under $100 and if you want a fixed blade there are plenty that can be hade for around $100.

You don't need to spend a ton of money to get decent knives, it's just a matter of shopping around to figure out what you need for what you want to do. Maybe it's just that people don't want to spend the time looking fo the right knife so they just pick up the nearest cool looking thing with a blade the next time they're at wal-mart.

I agree it is silly to go hunting with top-end gear except for a junk knife. But I don't think they deserve redicule.
I think that part of Runs With Scissors' point in the thread was that HE gets ridiculed by others for carrying a good knife, while those giving the ridicule are more than financially capable of owning good knives themselves. I don't think that Runs With Scissors' intention was to ridicule; rather, he's seeking validation for his actions and desires understanding as to why he himself is needlessly ridiculed.

For certain things in life, I hold a "don't buy low quality" credo. If I can't buy high quality, I'll wait and save up. These objects are: knives, guns, and shoes. I know that a quality knife, particularly in the wilderness, can be the difference between life and death. Quality of firearm can mean the same thing. As for shoes, my leg was crushed by a boulder a few years ago and I need quality to be able to walk properly. But, believe you me, whenever I can I look to save a buck or two. It's simply a matter of priorities and (hopefully) knowing or learning where you can or can't cut cost corners. And, of course, high cost doesn't always mean high quality, or vice versa.

I'm perfectly happy with my sub $200 New England Firearms single shot rifle / shotgun combo (.22/.410 Versa-Pack) and my sub $30 Victorinox (Soldier).

Here's a good one for ya.
I sold a Doc. a CRKT fixed blade I want to say it was a Windriver about $30.00 bones.
I'm talking to him after the deer season and he tells me "I wish I would of known a $30.00 knife worked so well I would of picked one up years ago."
Oh yes, he shoots a Weatherby.
