Becker Bamboo Mouse Trap

Thanks for the encouragement

Anytime! I an always stoked when people get into trapping. Don't know why, but I feel a strange attachment to that skill and it's exciting for me to see more people interested.

This is actually the first Tilong I have made. I have wanted to for years but couldn't figure out how the trigger worked fron the fuzzy pics I had seen. Then John (rescue riley) sent me a link to the tin can vid and that showed me how it worked.

With some large culvert, think that would work for a black bear?
Just thinking out loud... :D

No, at least not with primitive mateials. The main problem with using snares for bear is that bear are to heavy and strong for most materials. You would need a type of cordage strong enough to withstand a bear struggling but thin enough to choke it through the thick fur and fat layer. Snares are not commonly used for bear, not even modern twisted wire snares, although some people do use them with success. It is far more common for modern clamping type foot hold traps to be used. As far as primitive traps go, deadfalls are MUCH more appropriate for large game like black bear. This trap in particular is excellent for bear if you size it up appropriately and weight the deadfall. It's the trap in post #2

If fact, this video from 1954 shows this style deadfall successfully killing a black bear

Very informative.
But I was kidding. :D

Sorry, didn't realize you were kidding. Historically, black bears killed for ceremony (Native American as well as First Nations) were killed with hunting implements or clubs but bears harvested for meat, tallow, and hide (blankets) were killed with deadfalls because it was the safest way for the hunter. Most blackbears taken before the European introduction of firearms were killed by traps like those.

Cool. I asked the same question about a spring trip and a large pine tree. But I was joking there too.

Hell yes, anytime!

Awesome!! I'm gonna take you up on that.

That is cool. Those traps would have to be ginormous!

Did you see the last video? The trap they use to kill the bear is about 5 ft tall but they add lots of weight to the deadfall. I made one that size a couple years ago for demonstration at a primitive gathering and it took four guys to raise the deadfall.

New Vid (this one wasn't taken with my cell phone!)

jclMD- VERY COOL, great job
What did you use for the spring tension on the noose and how is it attached to the Pringles can? Can't tell from the pics.

Counter weight is a 1lb weight(barbell) Heck I missed that I didn't attach the weight to the can, unless you mean where the pop stick hooks on the lip of square cut out on can.

THANKS

No, I mean where the spring tension wants to lift the noose. On the original trap it is a bent bamboo stick. You said its a weight on yours so the tension delivery is different. Can you take a full size pic?
Thanks
