Becker-based Nessmuk Trio's ?

If a Nessmuk Trio can be loosely defined as a folder, a small fixed blade and a chopper then my Becker based Nessmuk Trio has got to be

* Vic Huntsman
* BK11 / BK14
* BK9 / BK2

If an ax has to be involved - well bleah. I have a couple of decent tomahawks that I guess I could slip in there but I'd rather use my bigger Beckers.

Beckerhead #42

Yeah, this is Beckerland, we make the rules :) And by "we", I mean Ethan and the mods :)

Although I have a nice Wetterlings, it doesn't make the cut for longer backpacking sorties. Plus, I'm more comfortable with batoning rather than chopping for firewood. To each his own plus a Becker :)

Now the guys posting with no Beckers in the mix - to the torches and pitchforks :), and Beckers, of course.

No Becker, but I've carried this one a lot over the years. A little Norlund, the first knife and sheath I made and a four bladed Queen given to me by my dad.

I'm reviving this thread because I didn't want to start a new one and because it might be interesting to old, new and aspiring Beckerheads alike. Forsooth, I like BK&T.

This is what I'm gonna be carrying to the woods as soon as I possibly can.

BK-2, Mora Classic #2/0 (the smallest one) and Sierra folding saw (I've tried a Bahco Laplander and liked this more, it cuts faster due to the longer teeth)

I have several potential Nessmuk trios ready to rock, but I tend to feel that the current gen of Becker big boys (BK2, BK10, BK5) are a little too big if you're also carrying a chopper with you. The neckers are a little too small. The Tweeners will fill that middle slot oh-so-well, otherwise I'll just bring a BK2 rather than a separate bigger chopper. If you've read Sears' book, he tells a story about felling smaller things rather than getting all macho and chopping down bigass stuff, which was why he went with a hatchet.

My current hobby is trying to find the right trad to fill the small knife slot (Sears used a traditional moose pattern). I think the neckers are too big. I'm thinking it really needs a bail, but I'm having trouble finding the right folder with a bail that isn't an ninety-dollar Great Eastern Cutlery knife. I'm not trying too hard, though, because what I really want is an excuse to buy another Great Eastern Cutlery knife :)

I could easily see myself with a Machax, drop point tweener, and a GEC White Owl. Or my Cutlass machete, Fletcher Pocket Kilo, and GEC Conductor. Or my Cold Steel Trail Hawk, Mark Wohlwend nessmuk, and Mark Wohlwend necker. Or my...

Now all I really need are backpacking trips long enough to have any reason to carry that much heavy junk :D

Y'all are missing the "essential" Moose pattern folder.
Seriously, it's called a Moose.
Oh, BRL beat me to it. Yeah... Moose knife.

I'm working on my double bit.

I have a couple of Moose folders. BFC's very own Morrow sent me one as a gift. I'm still thinking about how to pay him back.

And I fleaBay'ed one on my own. Both of them are "Winchester" brand knives made by Queen.

About that folder... have you tried Opinel?

A very good suggestion. It's on my shortlist. I'm thinking a No. 9.

No. 9 is great, I've had one in my EDC rotation for the last 6 years. I'd suggest you grind down the spine to make the blade more of a drop point instead of the typical trailing clip point of these knives. Makes the whole thing a lot more sturdy and less prone to tip breakage.

Good suggestion maethor (I might hesitate though because I really like the standard Opinel profile).

I've carried a trail hawk on my pack, a Grohmann #4 on my belt and a CSM 11 in my boot. Was actually extremely Handy.
I'll see if I can get a pic in.....

I suspect this spring I will change the #4 to My SK5 consistently and the tomahawk to a Machax

I'm pretty sure I'm getting one of these for Valentine's Day.
I laid down some heavy hints, and the stock dropped by one fairly soon afterwards.
Made by Canal Street for Moore Maker.

Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiice! Now thats a good Vday gift

Took this pic after I Fisked my BK7. It needed to show off a little. The Nessie is a frickin awesome interpretation from Dan Pierson that I received in a KITH. The tomahawk I won at a hammer-in. Usually have a SAK but like trappers too. Played with everything for a while and the BK7 was tearing it up as was the little tommie.

Like that Moore Maker hatchet. Saweeet.

Actually I prefer the DOC-CANADA 4 - Cincinatti Machax, BRKT Bravo-1, Vic Spirit and Buck Alpha Dorado (although my Izula II is quickly passing the Buck as my choice for a small blade - will have to update my picture one of these days).

My trio right now is my Trailblazer 15" Sawvivor (which is freakin' amazing and light), my BK2 or my Scrapyard Scrapper 6, and I'm trying out the Vic Rucksack right now (on the recommendations of Ethan and Moose). I like the way this all works together. If I'm going lighter, I'll take my BK9 or CS Kukri and my BK14.

I love this thread. Thanks for reviving it Maethor. I must have missed it the first go 'round.

My Nessmuk trio would have to be my well loved BK-7, my Bahco Laplander and of course my BK-11 for the fine stuff.
