Becker BK-1 Brute - best way to sharpen recurve?

I have put my beloved Brute through some very hard work, and it has performed amazingly well. I have been able to make it consistently sharp with little effort... except for the concave portion of the recurve-shaped blade. My rectangular whetstone makes it awkward and extremely difficult to get an even stroke across the edge.

Can anyone suggest a better method for sharpening the ENTIRE length of the blade?

Thanks!

A Spyderco Tri-Angle SharpMaker comes to mind...

They're quite pricey. I've never used one - is it really worth the investment?

Is a round/oval diamond sharpening steel a suitable tool?

I sharpen mine with a round diamond rod. I have and love the sharpmaker for smaller knives, but the Brute is a little large for my current skills. Since I always have smaller "cutting/slicing" type knives with me, I usually just put a utility edge on the Brute as it gets used pretty much like a hatchet most of the time.

I do almost all of my sharpening with round diamond rods. They work really well on blades with recurves.
