Becker BK-7: Perfect Compromise, or...

Hey Chad,

How well dose the GB mini chop compared to the larger SFA and the 7 and 9” knives?

Eric, that is why I quoted the performance of the top axemen in the world for comparison. They can't reach the extreme level of performance you support. These are individuals 300+ lbs, well over six feet tall, and who do nothing else but compete in timbersports competitions.

As for your remark about tip velocity, the only way what I said isn't true is that if the knife is the only thing rotating. So yes, if your arm is straight and you are chopping by just snapping your wrist, then blade length is more important than I noted. If this is the case, most of what I noted about chopping doesn't apply either as I assumed a fairly different technique was being used.

My two cents. A lot of what "will do" depends on where you are and what you have to do.
In the hills of NC a BK7 is great (even though, I prefer the BK9).

The CU/7 (popularly called the BK7) is a very nice knife for the price. It's a LOUSY chopper. It's not designed for that, it's more along the lines of a replacement for the venerable Ka Bar. If you want a 7 inch chopper the Swamp Rat Camp Tramp or CS Recon Scout are nicely forward weighted for this.

All this talk of the BK7 made me want one. So when I saw one at a local shop yesterday, I bought it today. :D Seems great. I had to experience one. I'm covered anyway since I already have a Swamp Rat Camp Tramp and a Gransfors Bruks Wildlife hatchet. Now to work on the handle.

Amen. We often get caught up in rating it purely as a survival knife when it's intended design is as a military utility. Still it's my favourite bush blade although I don't chop wood with it because the wood here is awy too hard to chop with almost anything. I don't build shelters either.

about the bk & t 7;

A good choice!! I 've used mine as much as I could last camping trip! The other knives we were carrying seemed useless against the becker! No bowie, glock knive, victorinox, leatherman, ... was able to beat the becker on this survival!

At their price points, I think the BK7 and the Camp Tramp are the best out there. In between the two price points is a better all around knife, the Fallkniven A1. I can certainly out chop my BK9 with my GB hatchet. And I imagine I could out chop a Battle Rat or a Battle Mistress with the hatchet as well. My guess is the top men at their respective tasks would achieve similar results. If I were leaving tomorrow for a two week trek on the Appalaichain Trail, of all the above I would take the A1 due to the fact it is 25% lighter than it's closest rival, and can accomplish any task on that journey.
