Becker Bk10 Grind Lines Argument!!

I'm hoping that someone on here can either prove me right or wrong. I recently bought a brand new Becker BK10 and it arrived quickly and all was well. It's a great knife and the size and weight are perfect. However, I did notice that the blade bevels were not symmetrical.
As you probably know, the Beckers have a flat grind, which should end about 10mm from the spine. It's ground correctly (10mm from spine) on the non-stamped side, but,it is ground up to 5mm from the spine on the other side.
I wrote to the retailer and asked if they could see if they had a symmetrical one in stock and they told me that the two BK10's they had in stock were the same as mine. The guy also told me that "the BK10 is a tool to be used in the field and not a collectors item" I said "Yes,I know it's a tool to be used in the field which is why I want one that is symmetrical" then he said "Becker just try to get a good edge on their knives and they don't worry too much about getting the grinds even" (surely thats nonsense:confused: !!) and so it goes on.
Should I expect my £50 BK10 to have symmetrical grind lines or am I expecting too much?
Do any other BK10 owners have this complaint?:grumpy:
Or BK7 owners for that matter.

call becker or cammillus what ever and see what they say . sounds like the guy you talked to was an arrogant jerk that didnt like having his tail feathers ruffled by honest questions . [a true banny rooster sales person]. as far as i can tell my bk7 s grind lines are fine . you came to the right place for advice though and good luck.

Thanks for the reply Gutsy! I've sent an email direct to Camillus as I now feel I deserve to have a symmetrical blade.Every other manufacturer (just about) manages to make blades that are even on both sides, so why should I accept one that is not? I'll report any progress on this thread.

Soup_monger,

My BK10 dimensions are 10.2 – 10.7mm on the stamped side and 7.4 – 8.6 mm on the other.

My BK7 dimensions are 7.6mm on the stamped side and 9.2mm on the other side.

I have never given this a second thought and it doesn’t bother me (just my personal opinion).

i have no idea how their customer service is so let us know. when i have a problem with a knife iusually just call them as i would much rather talk to a gosh darn warm body than wait around for an email . i guess its because im an assertive red-neck and dont have any patience . let me know how it goes.

"I have never given this a second thought and it doesn’t bother me (just my personal opinion)."

Me neither. These are very inexpensive knives - at least on this side of the pond.

A couple of millimeters difference would be fine with me just as it's fine with you SAK. But 5mm difference just looks like sloppy workmanship. I appreciate that the Becker line of knives are tools, and mine will be used as one. It's just the first knife that I have received where my immediate thought was "thats not very well made".
Anyway, Merry Christmas to you all and have a great New Year.
Cheers

Well, Camillus has asked me to send my BK10 back to them and they will replace with "A BK10 with even grinds". Could be a good result, I'll let you know when the replacement arrives. I'll try and post some pics of my custom Becker Necker soon. Cheers:thumbup:

Well, I finally lost my patience after sending the BK10 back to Camillus NY using Airsure (3-4 days) on the 29th of December.
I hadn't received any replies to my emails and I was getting a bit grumpy about it so I phoned them today and spoke to a couple of nice ladies (not at the same time) who assured me that it had arrived and that they will send me out a replacement today.:)
I know this all seems like a lot of bother to go to for a £50 knife...but it's the prinicipal of the thing and I now know that the box with my knife in it was sitting on a shelf unopened as a low priority item since the start of the year.
Who knows, this thread might be useful for somebody else who wants to know what Camillus' customer service is like.

Be patient. One month is generally considered excellent service for a knife company, and you're not even giving them 1/2 of a month!

Thanks for the tip Walking Man, I've not had deal with knife companies before so all advice is much appreciated.
Hopefully the replacement will arrive soon and I can praise Camillus for it's customer service.:)

i cant wait to see what soup monger dose with it after he gets it . ive seen what he done to a necker and can only imagine what he could do with a bk11. dont forget to post pictures soup monger!

Thanks Gutsy,
I'm looking forward to working on the BK10 and hopefully it will look as good as the Necker.
I'll update this post when the BK10 arrives.

Thanks Mies for the measurments too,
(I was hoping Camillus knew how to grind evenly:) )

i think you guys would croke if i posted pictures of my bk7, its really ugly. the handle is wrapped in black athletic tape and around the back of the handle is wrapped with black rubber bands[ three of them]. its not for show thats for sure but i can hack up fire wood alot easier with it without it punishing my hands . its so ugly i should probably name it.

And so to end this tale of grind lines, My replacement BK10 arrived today and it was with a certain sense of trepidation that I opened the box. It had arrived in one piece and I had a look at the grind lines.
10mm on the non stmped side and 7mm on the stamped side. This is a marked improvement over the one I sent back and I can live with this level of accuracy, but, whats wrong with the machines at Camillus?
I doubt that there is a guy at a grind wheel doing these Becker blades by hand so if the uniformity they are producing is not even, why not sort out the machines, or the people operating the machines?
I'm not sending this one back though as I need it for my February trips into the forests of Scotland.
Customer service at Camillus was mediocre and I was quoted the wrong shipping date twice.
By coincidence I am visiting New York at the end of March for 10 days and I'm toying with the idea of going over to the Camillus factory (I could say that I flew over just to get an evenely ground BK10:D )
I hope that this thread is helpful to someone else who is unhappy with their Becker blade, but, I'm just happy to have a knife again.
Cheers people!

Soup monger, I am sorry to hear of your disapointment with your experience with BK&T. I know this is not your first Becker (I've seem your awsome Necker in another thread).

I hope this doesn't sour you on the great products available from them.
The performance of your BK10 should more than make up for the ugliness of the grinds.
Best of luck, enjoy the woods.
