Becker Bk10 Grind Lines Argument!!

Thanks shotgunner, I'm glad you liked the necker as I'm going to do a similar job on the BK10 with an amazing piece of African Leadwood on the handle and brass bolts.
I love the steel on the Beckers, When I polished up the Necker I naively thought that it would be a constant battle to prevent it rusting, but, despite using it everyday and no maintenace/oiling whatsoever it has showed no signs of discolouration and is still as bright as the day I finally put the sandpaper down.
So, Beckers are still great in my book and I would definitely have another. Could it simply be that because the blades are mass produced, they look mass produced?
I'm probably just too fussy:o
Watch this space for Custom BK10 photos
Cheers

No, I dont think your being picky. You pay for an item, and you expect a level of quality, mass produced or not.

I'm looking forward to seeing your "souped up" crewman.

hey, soupmonger! my necker is supposed to be in around this friday. havent got any handle material yet [ still looking] . perhaps we can gab about modifying the thing when it comes in.

Sure Gutsy,I'll happily gab about mods. I'll be starting to work on the BK10 around then so if you have any questions or are just throwing ideas about add them to this thread and I'll join in.
Would be nice for this thread, (that is basically my moan about Camillus), to turn into something positive with lots of pics of Becker mods.
Are you thinking cord, wood or micarta or dunno yet?

im probably gonna start out with cord until i can find the exact handle material i want . sofar i think im leaning toward some thick heavily textured g-10 but who knows . it will probably be used quite heavily for splitting kindling and the like so my main reason for the handle mods is for ease of use in the field and last but not least, tinkering around and making a good knife better. i cant afford the tools to do it so ill probably do most of it by hand unless i can find somebody that will let me use their tools. ill be sure and ask everybodys opinions before i order the material though.thanks soupmonger.

No problem, It's all possible with hand tools, but, I would recommend an electric drill of some sort as I toiled with a hand drill in stabilized maple wood (resin impregnated) and I would think that G10 would be even tougher.
It would be an idea to make templates out of cheap wood first as well, not shaped or anything, just so you know all the holes line up.
I'll wait till your underway though before I start pouring out more advice..:)

my necker came in yesterday and i love it . went to that texas knife supply site and think ive found the handle s i want and will probably order them when i get the money. ill stick with cord wrap for the time being and will let you know when i plan to order the materials . thanks soupmonger.

Glad to hear you've got it now Gutsy.
I started the sanding of the BK10 by hand on Thursday night and I keep going at it in stages.
I'm glad I started with a Necker because it let me know what to expect from working on a bigger blade.
Back to my sanding now.:D
Cheers

Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this, but I'm pretty sure the blades at camillus are still hand ground and sharpened. They may have jigs or whatnot, but people are still the ones setting stuff up, and with the volume of production they do 5mm is easy to miss.

^ true and mine differs too.
doesn't really affect the performance of teh knife I can cut a straight line fine.

I suppose everyone has different standards.
Some people might accept bad workmanship while others will not.
Each to their own.

Ok, As promised I have finished the custom job on my Becker Crewman and here are the results.
I used the following materials:

Becker BK10 sent from Camillus New York as a replacement.
African Leadwood bought from a dealer in Minnesota.
Three brass Corby Bolts bought from Germany.
Polypropylene spacers (from a DVD case :D )
And a stainless steel thong tube from England.

The balance is almost neutral and only very slightly tip heavy.
Once again, all the work was done by hand apart from the drilling of the holes for the Corby bolts.
I hope you like it.:)

Thanks Bob, glad you like it.
Does anybody know if the BK12/Ritter is coming out soon?
I'm already thinking about my next mod.:D
