I was thinking yesterday about replcing my Becker Crewman with one of Ontario's RATs. The Becker's bulk keeps me from using it much, and the RATs seem like similar knives that are easier carrying. I know nothing about the RAT line. Your thoughts?

I like both brands but I carry a BK7 for big chores & RAT3 for little chores . but i can see the BK10 to replaced by a RAT5 or TAK1 and get the job done with less bulk...as the BK10 has. Hey Folist email or pm me....

my next purchase is gonna be the RAT5 ,,,have the rat-3 and i like it,,,small, tough, concealable, hardly know its there,,also very light,,great knife,,

I love the RAT lineup,(just look at my avatar) I own RAT7 1095,3 D2,3 1095 & TAK1 D2 .Great knives and value priced hard to beat that combo....with a excellent reputation . you can't go wrong with any RAT you choose if it fits your needs !!!!!

Folist be aware that you might have to modify the handle to fit your hand, the RAT lineup was set up for just that. The BK 7 and the TAK in 1095 are the only knives I've bought two of.;)

I have big paws, and the handle for the Beckers seemed too large for my mitts couple of years ago. I overpaid for a BK7 back in May, and can't decide if I want to remove the coating or sell it. I just bought a RAT7 in 1095, and while the handles look unwieldy and gawky, they fit my hand very well. If you have large paws, I would go for the D2 series if you get the RAT5, I've only been able to handle the 1095 RAT5 and that handle was too small. My RAT7 has micarta handles, and thick slabs. I don't know if a RAT3 figures into your future, but while I really liked the 1095, the D2 version fits my hands better. The TAK1 series, well, I only had D2, and the handle was quite comfortable. I'm guessing the RTAK is out of your size range, for relation to the BK10. Scott Gossman showed me his RTAK, which is his truck chopper, and he had re shaped the handles on his. I saw a factory RTAK recently, and Scotts mod was much more comfortable. If I was you, I would get someone to modify the handles on your BK10 before you get rid of it. Definitely get a RAT if you can though. Personally, I hate the coating, other than that, they are great knives.

I also hate the black coating. I have been thinking of stripping it off the Becker, but I may try to swap it for a RAT or TAK. I like having at least one tank-like knife around, but I'm more likely to use it if it is less of a pain to tote around.

The stock handle shape on the Rat-7 was a little too chunky for me. I reprofiled it with a sander. be sure to wear a respirator if you do this.

I like mine a lot. It chops well and is a decent slicer. A Rat-5 would probably be a good counterpart to the BK5. The D2 Rat-7 would be the way to go if you're going to strip it. There is actually a thread on here where someone did this.
