Becker bk2 quality

"Remember these knives are not meant to be display knives. They are lets get dirty, knock down and drag-out, get the job done knife." Tom

Based on this post by Tom at Chestnut Ridge I ordered and recieved a BK2 and what a blade it is. I have scoured all the threads trying to decide between a BK2 and an Rat RC-4. Many, many pictures I saw of Becker knives were doing actual work, the blades were put thru some tough tasks. I could not find many (if any) pictures of Rat knives doing the same things.

This lead me to believe that most people buy Rats to collect and Beckers to use. I wondered why the RC-4 was ~$30 more than the BK2. If you add the ~$30-40 for the micarta scales this will bring the cost up to nearly $100 for the BK2 which is now close to the RC-4. So the two knives are then comparably priced.

Plenty of people use their RAT's. Go over to the RAT sub-forum and take a look!

Right. But the two knives you mentioned (BK-2 vs RC-4) are miles apart in terms of size, weight, blade geometry, etc. For example, I'd consider an RC-4 for EDC use. But a BK-2 is a bit too much for me to try and lug around all day.

IMO, a much better comparison would be the BK-2 vs the RC-5. Of course, the RC-5 is more expensive than the RC-4 and MUCH more expensive than a BK-2.

I've got what I consider to be the best of both worlds . . . a BK-2 and an RC-4.

bld522 and rmc85, thankyou for the feedback. rmc85 I was looking in the Rat forum, but couldn't find many hard use pictures of Rats, while Becker forum has tons of pictures of these knives being put to task.

Anyway, I will probably end up buying an RC-4 someday just because of the overwhelming feedback from guys like you.

To quote Jeff Randall of Rat Cutlery "Anything with Ethan Beckers name on it is going to be an excellent knife". I would buy a BK-2 in a heartbeat. It is a stout beast. If you plan to use the knife, it will be just fine.

I had a BK2 and traded it to another forum member. I do regret trading that knife, as it seemed to be able to do most anything I needed. I WILL get another one soon. It is a beast and a superior hard use knife.

I agree with RMC, I've seen just as many used RATS as I have Beckers. I also think the BK2 and RC4 are completely different knives. I have both, and use the RC4 more on the trails and for camping. The BK2 doesnt get to see much action, because it is really thick and heavy. It's a great beat the crap out of knife though if you ever need to do something that a knife generally isnt supposed to be used for.

I get the same feeling when I pick up my BK-2 that I get when I pick up my Scrap Yard Dog Father CG. They're both beasts . . . just one's a little shorter than the other. :D

I'm not known for batoning my knives. I prefer to use an ax for splitting. However the BK2 i happily wail away on with a chunk of wood and split wood with it. its beeefy

All of the knives that you folks are talking about are well made knives.

Made in the USA
Lifetime Warranty
And they have already proven themselves.

Remember each knife will excel at its own task. For instance I would not want to chop wood with an RC-4 if I had a BK9 around, it would get the job done allot faster. I also would not pull a BK9 out to make a hot stick if I had an RC4.

Now when you compare a BK2 with an RC-4 I think its up to the user to determine which knife best fits their needs. Both knives have proven to be user knives, and both come highly recommended.
