Becker BK2 V.S. ESEE 5

I'm getting conflicted answers and i don't know how to please anyone on this forum. I'm sorry, i'm new to this, but is posting similar threads such a crime? Jack Black and marcinek aren't the only ones complaing about this, there were multiple others. To all of those who simply answer the question and help me out, I really appreciate it.

You are getting "conflicted answers" for exactly the reasons Jack Black and I noted. You will only get clear answers when you ask clear and answerable questions. And now you want to throw the Fallkniven A1 into the game also!

You have posted all these threads with all these knives and have never told us what you plan to do with the knife. What you have done is ask "What is the best knife?"

We cant answer that. It's not that we don't want to help...we do.

You have asked an excellent question. I have 2 Esee 5s and 2 BK2s. I have done a lot of cutting tests with each one, and each are as tough as a knife could get. Without telling you what you can already see, the Esee has a pointier tip, and the fit and finish is better than the BK2. However, for all around use, the Becker excels in my opinion due to the saber grind being closer to the spine than the Esee. The BK 2 is a better slicer ( if that's important to you ). Both my Bk2s are stripped of their original coating and one of my Esee's is stripped. If I had to pick one, based purely on performance, it would be the Becker BK2. For style points, fit and finish, the Esee is the clear winner. By the way, the Esee handles are too blocky for me, again in my opinion, so I went ahead and contoured them until I was happy. Another valid point is that if you bought a Bk2 and then bought the micarta handles, and a better sheath, then you are within striking range of the Esee cost. I don't think the sheaths that come with the Beckers are as bad as some people think, but truthfully, you are getting a better sheath with the Esee.
Hope that helps,
John

how did you contoured the handle.... and can you provied a pic of that knife....I would like to do something similar to my RAT 7 handle

All 3 knives you've mentioned are excellent, in different ways. Without knowing what you intend to do with them, it's hard to give you a good answer. Please do answer marcinek's questions about what you plan on using your knife for, and what your budget might be.

Beckers start at a lower price point, and in my opinion, the handle is more comfortable, not that that stops me from modding it. I choose Becker over ESEE for the lower price and moddability. Many of us Beckerheads go to a number of steps to make our knives truly ours. For instance, here's mine:

I reground the guard and handle, and used the lanyard hole to make a BK11 style bottle opener and wire stripper, added bocote scales, reground the blade to FFG and convexed the edge, and reshaped the back of the blade to change the cutting characteristics. Mirror finished the blade and did some etching and patina work. Now it's really my blade. I know that people have done the same with ESEE, but I figure, if you're thinking you might want to do some work on your knife, better to start with a lower price point. As for the warranty, Ka-bar is amazing at taking care of their customers. The only people you find complaining, generally, are the ones who didn't even bother calling Ka-bar to see if they'd take care of the problem. So it's 6 up, a half dozen down, between the two.

At the end of the day, you'll get a great knife no matter what you buy, be it a Becker, ESEE, Fallkniven, or else something else like a Swamp Rat or a Bark River. My usual advice applies here as well--pick the one that YOU like the looks of the most, since that's the one you'll be happiest with.

I contour handles on a belt sander, personally, if that helps. I use the contact wheel on a 4x36 for most rough contouring, then clean it up by hand and with a dremel for sharper corners and curves.

I'm sorry for posting so many threads, but whats the problem of posting multiple threads even if the questions are similar? Does it harm other users? Jack Black was complaining about how many threads I was creating , while in another one of my threads marcinek claims I am asking too many questions,
"Here's my advice.

Slow down!

Too many random questions about random knives at the same time.

Here's what you can do to help us help you.

1) Define exactly what you mean by "survival/bushcraft". Right now those are just meaningless buzzwords spat out by marketing departments. What do you really, honestly expect to do with this knife? You need to know that....we need to know that.
2) Tell us how much you want to spend on your knife.

Answer those 2, we should be able to go somewhere.

Decaf might help, too."

It's usually the case that people sit back and read the forums for a while before posting, then they make a few posts before posting threads. Before they ask questions, some posters have the good sense to see if those questions have already been answered, and when they ask questions they try to phrase those questions sensibly. In your case you immediately started posting threads, in some cases asking the SAME questions. SLOW DOWN and you might learn a little bit more, and maybe elicit a little bit more sympathy for your attempts to try and convince your mom that you can be trusted with a knife. Like many of the posters here, I'm old enough to be your father, or grandfather, and I was carrying a fixed blade when I was half your age, and fighting in a war when I was two years older than you, (my point is that I don't regard you as a child), but judging from your posting history (and like other Bladeforum users) that's all I have, I'm wondering if your mom has a good reason not to want you to have a knife. Slow down and win some respect, people will help you here, it's a good place, but you need to stop using a scatter-gun.
