Becker BK4

the machaxe is a good tool. think draw knife, and more. make stuff. change things. many good tasks.

firewood while camping... doesn't need to be processed ;) imho. just burninate the wood. too long? use the fire to cut it :) why waste energy?

need to make a better shelter? BK4 Machax good for all your shaping needs. frankly, it's a bigger knife than many people have been using for decades for camping... it's fun too.

REALLY need to cut stuff? precisely too? get a saw :>

practice safety. watch out for glancing blows that throw the blade back into you (something that happens more often than not with foreward heavy things like axes and khukris)

have fun, don't sweat it...

Hello Everyone,

I am looking for some input regarding the Becker BK4. I recently purchased a BK9 to use as my primary chopper along with a Fiskar's x7 axe while camping on extended trips. However I am now a little concerned by the weight that my pack is obtaining and in an effort to reduce this I am looking at the Becker BK4 as a replacement for the BK9 & axe on simple 1 night camping trips. Will the BK4 be a suitable alternatice to fill the roles of both the BK9 and axe? Any opinions are greatly appreciated. As always I will be carrying a smaller knife (BK2 or hopefully the BK10 when they are released) and folding saw on my travels.

Cheers and thanks for any input.

Hey wildnewfie,

Absolutely. I have used a Machax for 20+ years, albeit a Cincinatti model (1/4" thick), and never found it lacking. We did a bit of a comparison between the Cincinatti model and the Kabar model (seen here) and were hard pressed to find much difference, except the Kabar is quite a bit lighter. I also find the Machax to be better for small tasks, than the BK-9, probably because of lighter weight and less blade height. In fairness, of course, the axe will totally out-chop it, but unless you're winter camping in a boreal forest, the 4 is more than adequate

Just my 2 cents, of course,

Doc
