Becker BK7/9 + BK13?

I have just recently ordered and received a bk-7. I have not had the time to try it out because it is always dark by the time I get off from work. My first impressions though were really great.

The blade shipped from the factory arm shaving sharp...and I just love the ergonomics of this blade. I absolutely love the handle and it feels like the perfect fit, the only thing I would change maybe is how slippery it feels in a sweaty hand, but I think that is what gloves are for. It looks like it will be one hell of a swinger for a knife of its size and very versatile all around. I cant wait to baton through some of the oak I have laying around for our fire pit.

I was impressed enough with this knife that I decided to order myself a necker the same night I received the bk-7. Granted, I have yet to put the tool through its paces, but I will be doing that very soon.

I am fairly new to cutlery, at least when compared to an enthusiast. After doing more research I feel that I may have chose the wrong blade. I think I might have been better off with the bk-9, but the 7 incher logically seemed more versatile to me. I am curious how efficient it will be for my intended use. I guess I will find out on saturday. :)

I just recieved my BK7 and "freebe" today. I am enthused to say the least. 6 years ago I bought a Becker crewman. I sat it on the bumper of my truck when I used it to pry off my intake manifold. "bolts were removed just had to rip the RTV lose" Anyway, I left it there and someone took it when I walked away from my truck. After that I bought a RAT7. The RAT sufferd a rolled edge when I hit a knot in some oak. Then I read about the new beckers coming out..........glad I waited. These are soooo nice. I want to get a set of micarta scales for it though. I am taking a two week trip to the U.P. in december and will get a chance to field test it. Cant wait!!!! THANKS Mr.Becker!!!!!!!!

One note.
I am in the marines and I wish this sheath had a molle strap on the back. Think ill have a flight-E guy sew me one on.

Hey Solitary and Hanklet. Welcome to Bladeforums. Check out Becker Knife and Tool's forum in the manufacturers forum. There you can suggest the molle strap to Ethan (The man himself) hank. Also, Solitary.. Ethan Said micarta handles (which I believe you can take off the stock Grivory handles and replace them with) are in the works. You might like the grips on those for sweaty hands.

Hey Ethan.....

Here's a note of gratitude from a Cat employee who holds you in great regard. I work in the East Peoria tractor factory. As an apprentice machinist, I came to appreciate craftsmanship in metalworking, especially toolmaking. I'm now deep into my career, maybe soon to retire. And yes, I'm proud to own a couple of your creations - BK7 and a Campanion.

If you're ever around these parts, I'll arrange a factory tour for you.

Ethan not to hijack the thread but any chance someone will pick up your Becker Brute aka BK1. IMO that is one of the best machete camping survival knives ever produced especially at its price point As of not I am considering a SOG Primitive Jungle Fusion and a Kershaw Outcast Knife leaning towards the Kershaw due to as review that says it is the closest thing out there to the Becker Brute but with a thinner blade. Baring that the BK2 maybe?

Hey LongRider. As of now Ethan has said that he has no real intention of bringing back the brute. Poor sales, and the better chopping ability of the BK9 (in production now) have put the brute on the back burner.

Also, I'd advise the Outcast too. The jungle primitive has a very cheap steel, and the bade is extremely thin. I would not count on that knife for a survival knife for anything.

too true. I love that thick blade on the BK2. There's some rockin pics of BK2s being beaten up over in the Becker Knife and Tool forum.

Ethan,

Great knives! I used two in the Big "A" and have a total of eight. I really like my BK101 Desert, BK7SG (Gov't), and BK91 Desert.

Do you know your Beckers from most "sold" to least sold by model? Can you tell us? Did the BK77 sell much?

Hey Branned, you might have better luck posting your question in the Becker forum. I don't know if Ethan checks the general forum that much

Do you have a link I could not find only one BK2 thread it has one pic? and where are the pics for this thread?

The main blade with 1095 carbon steel looks great, but the little blade with cheap, low carbon steel seems pointless. I suppose a 2 in 1 deal has appeal to those who don't know their knife steels, but for an $80+ dollar price tag the 1095 isn't that expensive. The little knife with the cheap steel made in china doesn't really count for much in practical terms.

Upgrade the little knife to 420C or better and you have a great deal on offer, but the 3Cr13 steel is just cheap, chinese crap not worth $5.

My advice is drop the crap knife, but keep the sheath the same so educated consumers can add their own back or upgrade the steel to actually be decent.

Where'd you find $80 as the price for these? Are you outside the U.S.? Ethan Becker said that 3Cr13 is very similar to 420, and it's not made to handle anything big, it's a handy little backup for small tasks. It's good for what its for.

I never get this mentality. I could understand if there is some legitimate complaint about the BK7 or 9 but you all are saying they are a great value.

So I do not get the complaint about the freebee. It is not there to compensate for the primary knives, as they are each already worth more than we are paying for them or at least we know there are knives that cost twice a much that do not meet the standard of a Becker knife. Which means that the freebee knife is worth ten times what we are paying for them. It is free. If you do not like them toss them in the tool box or in the trash why whine?

Not any different than the folks being given new ford escort than complain because they are not getting a free Ferrari or the drunk on welfare complaining the check they never worked for is not enough.

Seems to take the whole culture of entitlement to a whole new level

People see this deal and they come into it thinking, oh sweet, a free Becker Necker or RAT Izula. I think their high hopes were let down when they found out it wasn't a 50 dollar 1095 steel knife. Since you aren't going to be digging or prying or chopping with a 2 inch blade anyway, I don't see what the big deal is. It's a beautifully designed and crafted small utility knife that would go great in anyone's boot, survival kit or back pocket. I just ordered a BK7 with the BK13 and anxiously await its arrival. I have a five day rafting trip coming up and instead of dropping another 30 dollars on a dive knife, the BK13 will be on my vest. I have gone through six or seven different Kabar products and they have yet to let me down. They wouldn't put their name on this BK13 if it weren't quality, and coupled with Becker's obvious talent for designing knives, I'm sure the little bugger will put out. I think I'm more excited about the BK13 than I am for the BK7! The Micarta grips look great, but at 40 dollars a pair I can't justify buying a set. I think I'm going to take two chunks of paduak, break out the carving knives and 220 grit sandpaper and make my own grips.

Wow, I'm sure KaBar didn't mean to offend such a steel expert . Did you even read any of Ethan's posts? He stated that they want to offer this knife for free so you could see if you like the design. In order to be free, it needed to be made in China and be 3CR13. If the design gets good feedback, then they may produce it but in the US and most likely of better steel (to satiate people like you :p ).

Upgrade the little knife to 420C or better and you have a great deal on offer, but the 3Cr13 steel is just cheap, chinese crap not worth $5.

That is why it is FREE!

My advice is drop the crap knife, but keep the sheath the same so educated consumers can add their own back or upgrade the steel to actually be decent.

My advice to you is to try the free knife out and reply back to Ethan your thoughts on the design and make constructive criticisms and suggest possible blade steels. Otherwise have some cheese...

Old thread wars are fun ; )

Someone should keep a tally and score so we can tell who won?

Fanboy = 1

Chinese Hater = 1

Sorry I brought back 3 old threads today, I am new to the forums but a long time edge user and abuser, and rather than starting new threads about topics that are arleady covered I searched for old ones.
