Becker BK9 some thoughts on a legend...

Let me start by saying I love this knife, there are pics floating around of mine, a Camillus version, that is beat to hell and still kicking.

From 99 to 2001 this was my one knife, more so than any other, literally, I had a studio apartment in Reno, NV and this was my steak knife, chef knife, camp knife and fall back self defense tool. So to say I am familiar with it is an understatement.

I gave it to my little brother when I thought it was to be replaced by something better, that something turned over the years to many things.

The Other Things, I thought would do better...

-Himalayan Imports AK Bowies, too fat, too heavy.

-Busse Basic 11-Nice knife, came close, ultimately though, stupid expensive, everytime I picked it up my first thought drifted to how much money I spent on it. That's not cool.

-RTAKs 1 and 2, both felt weird, handles didn't do anything for me, hot spots, etc. then the day the RTAK II went to the Sierra Nevada's for a week long trip and left me with a hybrid sickle/cleaver after hitting knots in a piece of wood.

-Kershaw Outcast I just got this one, like the looks, but in the hand, it's weird, everything I didn't and don't like about the KAI Shun Chef's knife in a tactical black package. Have to admit though, the blade is damned sexy.

-Cold Steel Gurkha, great knife, just awesome at chopping, and if I could only have one knife in a zombie apocalypse, this it would be, too heavy though, kitchen/camp prep is a joke with it.

-Scrapyard Dogfather LE, this was it, really it, this was the knife to replace the BK9, this had it all, ergos, balance, looks, c'mon it's a beast. Then the secondary market hit it and suddenly it's a Busse Jr. for no good reason it got expensive, a collectors item and that weighed on me because I collect some knives, but users get beaten, regularly. Then a funny thing happened I traded it, and never missed it.

Finally, I got to thinking about my ten year old BK9, it was cooped up in a closet in Covina, California, doing time in suburbia watching a 18 year old kid play PS3 games.

...So I went to visit my old friend.

When I went to the closet I was mad. The BK9 was there, rust had bitten the spots worn by blood and sweat. This was unacceptable, I told my brother the BK9 was going back up in the hills with me, (I traded him and Xbox game for it back) he could care less.

So I took the knife home, took off it's boots and went to work, stripping the rust and painting the undercarriage, then sealing it with clear coat nail polish. The blade was already convexed by hand some 8 years ago and still working sharp, so it was steel wool to the rust then a patina on the non black portion with mustard/vinegar/lemon juice overnight.

Now it's back, not in the rotation but back nonetheless, and a new BK9 from KaBar is coming, knock on wood.

So, ultimately a replacement was found, a new BK9, because changing for change sake is fun, but like the friends you make when you are 9, somethings are just better with time.

BK9 and friends...

Great story. Funny how things work out some times. You think you know what you are doing and that you are on the right path, only to find out what you left behind was what you really wanted/needed.

You got to buy some cool knives at the least lol. The outcast is pretty cool looking and the gurkha does look like one mean chopper. My bk9 ain't goin' no-where.

On a really random note, post 1,500 woohoo.

Beautiful knife, and cool story. Yea, I love mine. Its made by KaBar though. What are your thoughts on the difference between the two? I think im gonna get another one haha.

Nice story, I love the BK9.

You still out in nevada?
If so how are the Jack Rabbits out there, its been a few years since I been out that way and been wanting to go blast a few.

They are waitin for you. I am in SoCal now but since my wife gave me my walking papers on the 4th, I am lining up work and moving back to Reno in February.

For Good, this time :D

The KaBar ships tomorrow, I traded the Outcast for it...so I'll make a post reviewing the KaBar version probably late Feb. early March after getting some dirt time.

I think KaBar in general is a better fit for BK&T. The Camillus stuff was spotty at best imo. I know that alot of folks are looking through halcyon glasses when talking about them, but far and wide I remember going through quite a few before cherry picking mine at The Big Reno Gun Show back in the day.

good story. i almost sold my bk-9 a few weeks ago but changed my mind at the last minute so i ended up sending a new one to the buyer :o costly mistake but definitely not as costly as yours though. good stuff.

Cool story, broheim, love the looks of that knife and the way it returned.

Walkin' papers, huh? Sorry to hear about that, hope its a blessing and not a burden.

Reno is an interesting spot, I spent some time there as a kid. From what I can remember, I liked it.

Keep us up on the info, as you progress, you got friends here, as well as there.

The BK9 really seems to set the standard for an all around knife. It is on a very short list of my favorite knives of all time.

I have a Bushwacker Mistress that I feel the same way about. Which is why I placed an order for a BK9 this afternoon. Should prove to be a great user for a great price. Now do I order an ESKABAR or micarta grips for the BK9??? Great pic Zeke.

Yes.

Exactly the reason why I chose Becker when I started looking for a big knife. It's tough, it performs it's job very well, and the price is great. I can't wait for the day that mine looks like yours and the memories that will have been made to get it that way.

I work with a guy who had a Busse. He brought it to work one day and let me look at it. It was a damn nice knife, that had never been used before and never was until he sold it. That's ok for him, he likes collecting, but I like using. I'm the same way with everything I own. Knives, guns, gear, flashlights, phones, my wife(:D), I'm rough on them all and expect them to take it. If they can't I'll get something else that can.

My name is Mike, and dammit, I'm a Beckerhead.

lol ok I'll turn the cheesyness off now, but that's really how I feel. :o

Thanks Moose it's amicable, she is going full time to school, has a career , loves SoCal and wants kids soon. All things I support but just aren't for me, I lived in Reno for about twenty years, it's a perfect place for me.

Get the micarta, it's almost religious to break in a set on a new knife.

Gotcha, well, I'm glad its working out, I hope it continues to as well. Reno is an awesome place, love the terrain, and the weather.

Good deal on getting the BK9 back but I'm curious - why isn't it going back into circulation? Getting a new one is cool and all but the old girl certainly seems to have quite a number of miles left in her.

I am thinking I need both. I sure would hate it if Moose though poorly of me if I didn't order the Eskabar. :)
