Becker BK9 Versus Ontario RD 9 G-10

I really like the Ranger RD series. The handles, as they come from Ontario, are decent, but pretty blocky and a bit sharp on the edges.

I ordered an RD9, but I had it shipped right to Justin Gingrich to work some magic on it. I don't like the clipped blade shape on the RD's, so I wanted him to turn it into a drop point like the AFGHAN blade, contour the handles for ergos, and remove the jimping, just leaving the smooth thumb ramp. After all the work, it dropped the length of the knife down to be nearly identical to the BK7... and I really like this blade. Being FFG, it chops very well, but feels pretty nimble... and Justins prices are very reasonable. If I remember correctly, he only charged me $50 for everything he did...

I REALLY like mine.

This thread is over a year old.

Thank you and I was aware of that but I was just adding my comments so that other people who were looking at these knife options could have more feedback also in the event that if the joebonny (who started the thread) is like myself, is a person who doesn't rush into a decision may not have bought one or both of these knives yet....it took me a long time to decide on which model from bark river to buy, ended up with the bravo 1 swedge blade and I'm very glad I took my time deciding as I ended up getting the right knife at the right price.

Well, I know that there's not much I can add for the OP but I can add that I would go with the BK9. I have no experience with either, but I do have experience with Ontario's 1095 and Ka-bar's 1095. I'll say it this way- I have one 1095 Ontario and four Ka-Bar 1095 knives . The Ontario never ever sees any use and the Ka-Bars all do.
Their heat treat is good, just not as good as Ka-Bar's. It seems to be a tad softer and less resilient (edge rolling, chipping etc. wise) I have heard that the Ranger series handles are blocky and a bit short.
Hope this helps someone.
