Becker BK9 vs Ontario SP51 (your thoughts)

No, it will not weaken the blade. I think that on the internet, amongst the "survival" fanatics, and to some degree on BF, there is this atmosphere of "IT HAS TO BE INDESTRUCTIBLE. ..JUST IN CASE!". Caps intended. The steels that are used these days will far exceed any normal task you put the knife to, even the most onerous, provided you use common sense. Any piece of steel will break under the stress of being beaten with something of equal or superior hardness, or when used as a prybar with too much weight. Feel confident that the BK9 can more than take on any chore, same as I would say for my Junglas. Unless, of course, you prefer cutting through concrete or other knives with it on a regular basis.

I understand your point but wanted to ask why do you think it will not weaken the blade? Stamping the blade that deeply will surely introduce lateral stress into the blade will it not?

Most likely your BK9 will be the laser etched one. They sell lots of them at the river store. Come on over to Becker land and show us pics when it gets here.

I thought Amazon didn't have the master series laser etched version? Do they?

Glad i could be of help. KaBar customer service ROCKS !!!:thumbup: I have met Toooj in person. He stands behind their products, is a plethora of knowledge & is just a GREAT guy all the way around. IMHO, that speaks VOLUMES in & of itself about the company. Tomar's KaBars is also a great place to get your BK&T fix. Oh yeah, once you get the BK9, open it up, grab the grip & heft it, you will have a smile from ear to ear. That smile will only get bigger once you use it. It will be the best $85 you have spent on a blade & you will NOT regret it one bit. :D YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED !!! It will NOT be the last Becker you buy. Yes, they are THAT good !!! :D

Thanks man lol. You make it sound great. I appreciate your input and it has made me excited.

$85 really isn't a lot of money for a knife that size

nope; shop around! you can spend a TON more, and not get a better knife. imho :) okay, you CAN, but the improvements will be incremental in a way that might not be cost effective. customs too.

BK9? it's a GOOD knife. made in the ol' USA with a fantastic warranty

don't throw it, abuse it, and enjoy it for many many many years

Well ya in the absolute sense not too expensive... I just spend about $350 on a computer video card. But expensive with respect to what I normally spend on knives (ie. $25 for Cold steel gi tanto, $30 for one of the Smith and wesson search and rescue knives, similar prices for the cold steel bushman and pocket bushman as well as my ontario 22 inch heavy duty machete). But thanks for your advice, I will definitely employ it.

Got my BK9 and I am extremely impressed with it so far. Looks awesome, feels awesome and so far chopping cardboard great lol. Also I got lucky and got the master series edition with laser etching rather than the stamp.

What I don't like about the master series is it has this speckled sort of black coating rather than the smooth black coating. I like the smooth coating better but its ok.

This is what mine looks like: http://images.knifecenter.com/thumb/1500x1500/knifecenter/kbar/images/KABK9nw.jpg

Regular version with smooth coating: http://knifebroker.com/uplimg/img_100250BK9-KBJPG.JPG

Yup, you were right lol.

And the cool thing was my CS pocket bushman fits nicely in the front pouch of the BK9 sheath.

Just reading on another thread it seems this thread is much more resistant to stripping than the old smooth coat, in that case it makes sense and I'm happy. Smooth coat did look cooler though. This speckled coat reminds me of my smith and wesson search and rescue knife which has a similar coating lol.
