Becker Book Club

Stayed on the Erskine Caldwell train and read God's Little Acre. About as raw as they come.
Mostly through his Georgia Boy now. Written considerably later and completely different tone. More nostalgic and sweet in some ways.

GUYON.....

I second James' recco on No Exit as a cheery antidote for Caldwell ........ LOL...... I still remember the grand lift in spirits it brought ..... Must be at least fifty effing years ago......

I was visiting my little sister and her husband today, and she asked me if I wanted this book while they were cleaning out their storage area.

I'm hoping you said "Thank you very much." Depending on condition, out on the interweb, those range from $30 used paperback to $300+ New Unread Hardback

Given the weather, imma say Kim Stanley Robinson's "Science in the Capital" series. Forty Signs of Rain, Fifty Degrees Below & Sixty Days and Counting. Some really great reads coupled with provocative (actual) science in the fiction.

Oh I did. Condition; used paperback, not good. I rescued it from imminent mildew damage. If I didn't think bleach would kill it, I'ld use that to stop the onslaught.

Might try a cotton ball with a light amount of rubbing alcohol. USUALLY dries clean and fast. Just don't soak it like a beach towel at the pool. Results will depend heavily on how deeply the mildew has penetrated the paper. Should have good enough ink that it doesn't run when dampened.

I successfully used alcohol to wash out/ arrest mold/mildew growth in the cotton webbing on MK1/MK2/M8/M8A1 sheaths.

What he said. I have used rubbing alcohol to get mildew off a leather surveyors pack and off aluminum siding.

Just ordered On Rope: North American Vertical Rope Techniques.

Started "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West", by Gregory McGuire, a couple of days ago.
Loving it! Kind of a revisionist version of the events in Oz before Dorothy shows up...
Not a kids book by any stretch...a real page turner...

Great book.

Just about anything by Bernard Cornwell is worth your time. I really like the Archer series, Agincourt and the Uhtred series. Speaking of great historical fiction, have a look at The Frontiersman by Alan Eckert.

+1 on Bernard Cornwell, Just started the Uhtred series monday, on second book now... awesome

if you liked the Uhtred series, take a look at The Whale Road by Robert Low (4 book series)

And I HIGHLY recommend The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie (6 book series) *fair warning- quite violent

Isn't this also a Broadway musical? LOL :D

The last thing of any consequence I read was the warranty paper out of my Spyderco PM2 box.

Just don't have the time these days to read much.

Neither have I, except I don't feel bad about it at all. I almost had to resort to physical violence to keep from seeing the first movie.

I read ALL the books and I can say with all honesty....the movies are so much better. See the movies, skip the books.

I read the book and also saw the musical in Chicago. The book is much better than the musical and a bit more perverted than I expected. Not a kid's book for sure.

I read the book last year, was worth the read. I just find it funny when awesome books are ruined by making them into musicals.

To be a valid contributor to the thread: "On a Pale Horse" and "For Love of Evil" from the Incarnations of Immortality series by Piers Anthony are amazing reads.
