Becker Brute or Cold Steel Kurkri?

himalayan imports has a section on this forum... Yangdu runs some great deals on the forum... keep an eye out there.

Yangdu, the person behind Himalayan Imports, usually offers a few khukuris on sale every day or two--check a few days' worth of threads and take note of when they're posted. Nowadays it's usually early afternoon, western U.S. time. You'll see lots of knives at half the usual asking price, or less, due to minor cosmetic blemishes of the kind any knife will get under serious use anyway. In my opinion, they have much more character (and quality) than you're likely to get out of a stock-reduction-mass-produced modern khukuri anyway.

As for which to get, I've got two favorites. My top lately is the British Army Service, or "BAS", model. It's got a 10-inch blade and, at 15 inches overall, is a lot more carryable than some of the more traditional, full-sized khukuris. End result is that you wind up carrying it and using it more. Might be different if I lived in the woods and chopped trees every week.

Next favorite for outdoor use is the chiruwa ang khola--this typically comes in at about 16.5 inches, and is distinguished by its slab handle. Himalayan Imports' guarantee on this knife speaks for itself: bend or break it, and they'll send you two of them. Its blade thickness is pretty serious, and you're not going to be using it to clean bluegills--but then, almost all Himalayan Imports khukuris come with a little by-knife called a "karda", with a blade in the 2-inch range, fitted into the scabbard, for the little tasks.

Thanks for that post J.D. I could save some money by looking at the knives with minor flaws or buy them new. =P Havn't really deceided but so far I'm with buying my knives new. It would be a little apain since I'd have to get my dad's approval and it might be sold by then. I could really only shop on weekends but that's getting off topic. I'm probably going to get a Chiruwa for christmas and if I like it and want something bigger I'll get the 18" Ang Khola. I'll consider buying flawed kurkri's to save some money. Thanks

I dont know about the Becker but I can vouch for the CS Kukri. I find it nice and light but with some good chopping power. I have a 20in HI kukri that would out chop the CS but I find it abit too heavy. When I go bush I take my CS kukri and a folder.

If you have thoughts of a Brute in the future, you might act now instead. Camillus is in the throes of a worker strike and may not recover. I just picked up a Brute after much searching and found out just how hard they are to locate. Many vendors are sold out.

Honestly though, in the Becker series, I much prefer the BK-9 Combat Bowie. Great chopper.

Alright I have a site I found that I want some other stuff from too that has all the beckers in stock. I'll consider getting one then.

The sheath is excellently made and attractive, but it is bulky and the brass point will stick you a few times. There's no way to carry it comfortably without strapping it into the pack. Also, I use a folding DMT blue diamond hone to put on an edge. A small file will also do the trick nicely. I find the chakmak to be utterly useless. You won't regret your choice for a HI kuk!!!

Thanks for the input Maquahuitl. I was thinking about getting a set of large smith diamond hones for home and a DMT folding hone in the feild. I guess you could file down the brass point a bit or coat the tip in rubber. It wouldn't look so nice but it would be better then being poked all the time. I wouldn't want to do that unless I had to and for carry I'm going to try a strap type of set up. Thanks

Some folks simply remove the brass tip to avoid just those problems. The brass tip protects the sheath and point to some extent, but removing the brass tip doesn't do any real harm and can always be put back on.

If your looking for good solid knives look alittle further than becker. the bk7 & 9 are my favorites but there are alot of really good knives out there. (ranger, swamprat, scrapyard and cold steel if you choose the right knife). Some of cold steels knives are junk, but they do have a line of quality knives that are really inexpensive. buy the way cs (some of there line) and becker are made from the same company. The kurki you purchased looks like it going to be a real bad boy. It looks like it could do some real chopping, and its authentic also.

Havn't actually purchased a kurkri yet but am going to round christmas or if I find some good deals. I looked the the swamprat, but I'd rather have a few kurkris and gb hatchets\axes and a few moras. Thanks for the feed back.
