The older ones were very rough and I guess you could say greenish tan. The news ones are a tan brown. Look at danny.k's 20 and 2 those are the new ones . I believe he made his just a little darker. But the fit is spot on now.

Maybe this is wrong thread for this question, why do people add survival kit pouches to smallish kydex sheaths rather than the bigger one? Is it an ergonomics thing?

Dont know.
I most often find myself wearing some kind of clothing atleast when outdoors and therefore put "survivalstuff" in pockets.
Made a few cheaths whith ferrorodholders just because a thought it looked cool
