Decided the other day to go for a bushwalk as it had been a while since I'd been and done something enjoyable. So I packed up a few things, checked out a spot that I thought that would be cool on Google maps then off I went.

Found me a trail head..

Pffft. Trails. Let's go bush!

Ooh, what a lovely little brook. It appears to be babbling..

This looks like a good spot to set up.

I love the Australian bush.

Time for a couple of glamor shots..

My buddies for the day..

The fellas having a sunbake.

Right, now let's see what Springy takes when venturing the wilds..

First and foremost (naturally) some delicious CroVan. The 10 and the 14 today. A good first aid kit, coupla fire steels and little fire kit that goes in the front pouch of the 10 (the black stuff is char cloth).

In the large pouch I've got my 1ltr water bottle, mess tin and a Sawyer water filter. Theres a snake bite kit there and a couple of heavy duty garbage bags taped together (for added shelter) my emergency bivvy and a good water-proof jacket.

Here's my little survival tin by legendary Aussie survivalist, Bob Cooper..

..and heres the handy contents. The coolest feature is the tiny full deck of playing cards with survival tips printed on them. The folders are rubbish but they'll do in a pinch.

And last but not least, my beefcake snake boots.

I had other food and a second water bottle in the bag as well. So with every intention I set about doing some knifey things to show you all but that ended badly as you can see in the 'Becker bites' thread. I was going to spend the night by a fire, wrestling mozzies in a makeshift shelter but when your finger is literally shooting blood everywhere, well, it's time to bugger off I spose.

Anyway, hope you enjoyed my little (mis)adventure in the bush. Had great fun for the brief period I was out. Hope to do an extended solo mission soon. Hopefully I won't lose a limb..

Springy..

Good pics. Next time you go if you see any animals please get some pics of em cause would really like to see what species/animals you got down there. Do you hunt anything?

Most native critters over here are nocturnal so it makes it a bit hard to get pics of em. But I will try though bud. When you're way out of the way of civilisation you will see some kinda rare ones though. Sugar gliders, koalas, the odd wombat. I saw a numbat once. Mega rare.

You can hunt ferals if you're licenced (gun or bow) and you need to be in state forest or on private property. Can't even camp in national park let alone hunt. ALL native animals in Aus are protected too which makes it hard to trap because it's too indiscriminate. Knowing my luck I'd accidentally trap the second last known living native rock hopping mouse instead of one of the zillion friggin rabbits.

Those Auscam pouches are the bomb!

I pick em up at an Army disposal store near the army base here in Brisbane. Theres a massive bin full of em. I have a MOLLE vest as well that I'll be using on more remote treks to attach my 16 and some other stuff that I'll get some shots of next time.

Thank you for some very nice pics and great commentary....... I think I share a keen interest with a lot of us here in Australia in General and the Australian bush in particular....... Hope to see some of it in person one of these days........

Sorry that one of the "kids" bit you...... I try to teach them manners before they leave home but, some of them just do not get that they are not to cut their new folks............

Thanks again...

Man I love hearing from you Uncle E! Yes, that particular 10 must have been doin a wizz when you laid down the rules. But dang I love it! It was blazing through the branch I was cutting then Kablammo! take that finger!

We would love to have you over here sir. I believe you'd love it as much as I love your country. It really is beautifully wild over here and very different to what you're used to over there too. My wish is to get a better, more close up experience of the US. Such a varied and beautiful land.

Take care E and thank you for your awesome comments..

Springy..

Great stuff Springy, thanks for sharing. Looks like a nice secluded area for you to bum around in. And thanks for showing your daypack contents as well; I'm always interested in what other folks carry.

Man, I reeeally need to get out of the city one of these weekends...

Aw. I bet. Never heard of sugar gliders before. Or numbat. Will have to look them up.

Yeah hunting sounds like a pain in the a$$. Heard alot of other countries have the same types of troubles getting licenses for just basic critters like deer.Have to jump through alot of hoops for it to be legal. US is becoming the same way.

Ever had a bad experiance getting bit by one of many various nasty poisonous insects/reptiles there? I don't think I'd really enjoy sleeping outdoors in AUS with all the crazy stuff running around. Would be sleeping with a BK in one hand and a pistol in the other. ;) Though heard gun laws there are also very strict.

Good stuff man. I love going on outings.

Thanks lads. Yeah its pretty much my favorite thing getting outdoors by myself and checking out different places. I'm a bit of a gear junkie too so I like to have some things on hand. Also, I figure that if I DON'T pack those things I'll end up in trouble somehow and need them. What is that boyscout motto? Always be prepared by carrying heaps of $#!t with you? I think they shortened it though..

Yeah mate. Our government doesn't want its citizens having weapons. Of any type. So it is a colossal PITA to hunt legally which sucks because feral animals are one of the big reasons a lot of our native wildlife is endangered. That and poaching.

I got chased by an eastern brown once. Bloody thing slid after me for about 30 or so metres. It was keeping up and I was running flat out. And I'm no slouch at full pace either. Those things are massively toxic..

I've been flogged by jumping Jacks before as well. Basically they're large ish red ants with a bitey end and a stingy end and they jump like fleas. And they hurt.

Oh, I was stung by a scorpion when I was just a tot when my mum and dad took me camping out at Uluru (Ayers Rock). I don't remember it but apparently I screamed loud enough to wake the entire camp sight. Thankfully our scorpions aren't very poisonous. Which is kinda weird. Everything else is. Including Platypus (No I'm not kidding).

Beautiful pics Springy, thanks for sharing with others what i refer to as Gods country. Looks like you had an awesome day mate, me and you will have to go out one day if im ever up in your kneck of the woods.

Tell me more about that Bob cooper survival kit? Havent seen one before? what are they worth? I have the identical boots! i ordered them from Cabelas in the US, great boots but they tend to get a bit too toasty for my feet. But wouldnt hesitate strapping them on in winter they are superb qaulity, only wish i could wear them more.

Where i work, i was talking to a collegue this morning who is a Paramedic about my bush trips with my boy and my constant worrying of snakes he is getting me some purposely made snake bite bandages the Ambos use that arent availabe to the public. If i get a few ill send one your way brother.

He tells me Eastern browns will strike low, giving you more time, but King browns strike high often hitting the Torso - giving you a very short window to get treated.

Anyway mate great pics and awesome thread (especially like the 1st pic)

Cheers Gas

Yeah Springy,

I heard once than an explorer preparing to go to Australia went to the library and asked for books on all the venomous, and poisonous critters in Australia to take with him. They told him he would need a truck, so he said ok how about a list of all the critters that Arent dangerous. The Librarian went to the desk and scribbled on a napkin, then handed it to him. it said " Some of the sheep"

LOL.

That's crazy stuff BeeKay. Just watched some vids of the eastern brown. Damn are those things fast and hostile! Would not want to cross paths with one of those.

I thought this video of Jumping jacks was pretty cool too. Again, creatures I would not want to see around.
