Is still the BK1 MACHAX - at least in my opinion.
Reason? Because it was purpose built to be the best multi-purpose edged tool of its size, and it is. I followed Mr. Becker's design principles re: the Machax when he first produced it (under his own company BK&T). I own an original Machax w/ Cordura pouch sheath & a newer model from Camillus w/ Kydex as well as a Brute & Campanion.
What's so great about the Machax? Well, w/ my first Machax, I was able to chop down an abandoned telephone pole in about 15 minutes...w/ no discomfort at all. Why? To get the 3 glass insulators off the top so my 2 camping buddies & I could sip sambuca out of them that night. I have a pic or slide somewhere I'll try to scan. Also, the Machax is excellent for use as a draw knife for peeling poles, making bows, etc. Close, detail work can be accomplished by keeping the tip very sharp & using a close grip. The knife is perfection in a big form.
I haven't been on BladeForums for months, but since I've been contracted to write a survival book for a regional publisher (Lone Pine) in Canada, I'm back into research. Otherwise, I've taught outdoor survival in the Calgary AB area for close to 20 years, martial arts for over 20. My primary survival mentor is Mors Kochanski (author of Northern Bushcraft - a book many knife lovers will know).
I was saddened when Camillus went under, only because they made the BK&Y knives. Now I'm feeling just peachy that Ka-Bar has taken on the production.
So, now I need to KNOW... is the MACHAX coming back? Or are the rumors about it not selling enough units true? If the Machax didn't sell enough, it's only because most consumers really don't know how to tell a good knife when they see it... please see the plethora of god-awful 'tanto' knives being flogged by most manufacturers.
Someone please tell me that Machax will be back so I can promote it to all.
