I just received my first Becker in the mail... A BK2 that turns out to be a master series knife. I guess Amazon is all out of the others! Anyway, what's different from this versus the other BK2's? I can tell straight off the coating is different, and the logo as well.

Will the coating make it harder for slicing? Is it as hard or harder to remove the coating as on the other knives? Batoning problems with the new coating?

.....any help would be great! Are ALL Becker's going to this? Even BK9?

Any pro's/con's to the Master Series?

use it and tell US :)

the new knives got laser etchings.

probably the same steel, and heat treat. they're just better imho.

and yes, all the new knives should have the new coatings. way of the future Future FUTURE...

"it's just a coating" :>

In order of questioning:

Yes -- marginally. With wood processing stuff I've found it holds smashed wood a lot more than the old finish did.

Can't speak for "chemically", but "mechanically" (media blasting) the new coat takes about three times as long to remove vs. the old one, which says a lot about it's toughness.

From what I understand that is a "yes" -- eventually, as old stock gets used up.

It is my understanding that the Master Series label has nothing really to do with the coating change.

The coating is being changed because people were complaining about the old coating coming off too easily.

The Master Series is how Ka-Bar is now designating the knives designed by outside designers and manufactured by Ka-Bar; Becker, Johnson Adventure, TDI, etc., to differentiate between them and the traditional Ka-Bar line.

I haven't stripped any of the new becker coatings... but it feels a lot like the ESEE/Rowen type coating, which seems to wear better than the old smooth Becker coating... but when using a chemical stripper.. comes off MUCH easier. It just unraveles like an old lose sock... where I would usually have to scrape the becker coating a bit... it gets almost gummy.

That's really awesome though.. please post pics! I want to see a BK2 with the new coating! My new BK5 is going to be here today... hopefully it had the same thing... but I'm not counting on it... it's from Amazon.

The South American River store has at least one Becker with the new coating. As far as the box, it came with my "LE" 16 so it was put into circulation with the FPR tweeners.

Good to know. I'm still waiting for confirmation of the BK5 with the new coating being out in the wild. Sounds like they have the 11 and 2 for sure, now.

This, i used acetone on just the blade of a bk11 with the new coating and the coating peeled off the whole knife. painters tape was used on the handle and the blade was dunked into the acetone up to half inch before the handle, still it all slip right off!

I think this is the first BK2 that I've heard about with the new coatings and laser engraving.

Good to know that they're finally getting out into the channel.

I just noticed all mine say master series, but only the bk11 had the new coating.

hmm, maybe the new box, coating, and logo will morph into an excuse to get more knives for some of us. I can see it happening.
Congrats on the new steel!

The Master series box dosen't necessarily mean it has the new coating... i have bought two eskabars in the last 6 months or so and neither have the new coating.

Yup, i have received 5 becker master series boxes in the last 2 months but only 2 had the new coating.

Master series doesnt mean the coating or the "new version" here is there announcement

my bk7 came laser etched, and has the new coating, i like it, i think itll be much tougher. and guess what, same master KBD master series sleeve. pretty cool i think.

I have the bk-16 master series. with a few uses the coating smoothed out and wore away quite a bit. But it was hard to clean up after use. I like the new logo too.
