Becker Necker vs RAT Izula

You should take a look at the san mai Becker Necker. I believe the blade is constructed from Hitachi white steel sandwiched between 410 stainless. They can be had new for around $50 or so.

CPIO,

You are correct, the laminted Necker is Hitachi White Steel core with 410 stainless outer layers.

The retail price is approx. $125 and the best discount price I have seen is approx. $80.

This is a great design for ultra sharp cutting edge however, I would be reluctant to give it the hard use the carbon steel version could take easily.

The cut out section on the rear of the knife is not for wire breaking.

It is for bottle top opening,,,,, a real dumb idea for a neck knife,,,, and it does get in the way for my handling uses.

What percent of bottle tops are not twist off?

BTW I have three BK&T neckers (one is the laminated Hitachi White steel).

I am presently working on making an insert of aluminum or hardwood and with epoxy filling in the sharp edged opening.

FK

But when you need to open a Corona or Beck's beer your gonna need that bottle opener:thumbup:. I doesn't bother me at all and I have used the bottle opener many times. It's out the way and nice to have :). Best.

Umm yes, actually it is for wire breaking and bottle opening.
Pretty much all good beer dont have twist off tops ;)

looks like Buck has a new offering:
"buck-knives-paklite-series-usa-made-hunting-knives"
interesting pseudo-neckers. i guess everyone likes a skeletonized knife.

variety is good for the soul, but a san-mai necker is great around the neck :>

Says they are made in the USA too, which is nuts since they are so cheap. Sadly I think I would still go for the izula and throw in the buck just to see what it was like. Could even wrap the handle and continue to use the stock sheath probably. Thanks for the tip.

O yeah, i'd totally go with the Izula or Necker as a primary neck knife, but those are sweet little knock around blades. Especially for the price. Bucks 420HC is very good stuff.

I've been really proud of Buck lately. Lots of new USA made knives for the same price as other companies who have been selling imported knives at the same price point.

I was surprised that knife was made in the USA for $16. Thought it would have to made in China or a similar country. If I put together an order soon and the site sells that knife, I think I'll just grab one to see how it is. Would be good to just stick in my backpack and know that I have at least something with me at all times.

I think both knives are too heavy for neck knives. I have a Buck Hartsook S30V that I carry around my neck. So far, it has served me very well and it's comfortable. I don't even know I am wearing it until I need it. I've also got a small Mora with a leather sheath that I carry around my neck when I'm camping. But my Izula is my main belt/concealed carry knife; and, I generally also carry a tactical folder.

Both are great knives ! I keep my Becker in my Maxpedition 10x4 PSK & my Izula in my pocket or around my neck. The becker is slightly larger & thicker, the sheath is also alot bigger than the RAT. The RAT is easier to conceal & came a little sharper. Here are my 2 :)

I found that my hand didn't like the Becker handle shape, something about the guard being at a sudden right angle to the handle. Yje Izula is lighter and smaller, which is good if used as a neck knife but less suitable for a do-it-all knife.

I have two Camillus Becker Companions which i love and i almost bought a Becker Necker.
Ended up buying an Izula instead simply because A) i wanted to try a Rat and B) because i plan on rehandling my necker and the Izula is easier to rehandle (no bottle opener-thingy).
I'm sure both are equal in quality but I always have a SAK or multi-tool with me so the bottle opener is superfluous.
And i really like the Izula by the way!
The Becker Companion and the Izula seem like a perfect pair to me.
Might get a BK-9 sometime later thought.
Any new/old Becker models coming out/being reissued soon?

I have had my CSM BK11 in my back pocket every day for the past six weeks, during that time, i have used it enough to say the BK11 is the best designed neck knife i have ever owned. Although, my next purchase is an Izula. Take everyone's advice and get both.

I have just begun a custom leather sheath to replace the oversized FRN monstrosity that Kabar is attempting to bill as compact. I am thinking a pocket rig with a slot for my wallet, sized for a jeans pocket. Anyone have any suggestions?

here is the sheath, i must say i love this soution
