Becker or Esee for camp/survival????

ESEE has a better warranty, better heat treat, better scales, better sheath, and is a little higher quality. Is it worth 3x more than a comparable Becker? That's up to you. But the principle of diminishing returns applies. I'd consider the advantages ESEE has to offer more of a luxury than a necessity, and if you just want a knife that gets the job done, a Becker will do just fine. No one likes one brand and not the other; they're both excellent knives in their respective price ranges.

Depends on the work being done really. Saws are better at cutting cross grain but I haven't found I've needed to do that all that much in the woods and the times I have it's on vertical pieces where a folding saw likes to bind and kink.

for me it's all about having my base's covered. if i know ahead of time that wood will have to be cut, i will bring the appropriate tool for the job (like a folding saw), but that doesn't mean it will fully displace a hard use knife.

Thanks for all the info. I will most likely be going with the BK2 at this point and maybe a necker or izula. I live in northern Michigan so that where we will be doing most of our initial camping. We have tons of forests around here and lots of rivers. Just have to remember to bring some oil.

Or you might just consider a Condor Bushlore knife which will run you about $25-$30. It has a similar feel as an ESEE 4 at considerably less price and more spear point blade design that I find more useful for general tasks.

Get a BK2 and add a BK13, it should cover all your big and small needs. Get your wife a mora companion and pair it with a SAK like a hiker and you guys will be all set.

Don't forget the Ontario Ranger Series, if you are spending the money they are every bit as stout, the Afghan is a really overlooked knife on this forum.

I have both, bought the ESEE 5 before I heard of Beckers... I now own nearly all of the current Becker lineup. Becker knives are incredible for the price. Like was said before, you can purchase a BK2 (which is made from the same steel as the ESEE5, same thickness and pretty much smae blade shape, they fit in each other's molded kydex sheaths) for less than half the price of the ESEE. If you like micarta handles, get them! You will still spend about $3o less on the Becker and Micarta. If i could go back, I would have skipped the ESEE and bought a couple other Beckers... still might!!
