Becker popularity?

Hey who are you calling a smartass

Ark? Derek? Me? There's a lot of smartasses on here. Also a few others whose names shall go unmentioned.

In my opinion, the reason we have such a fantastic subforum going here is that the mods and Ka-bar have really gone for instilling a sense of community. I mean, what other forums sponsor monthly giveaways? That generosity has become tradition among the members as well, and many of us have offered our own giveaways. The contests and camaraderie, and our corybantic clamor for photos, all conspire to create the community that we all know and love.

As for the knives, well, they're comfortable, affordable, and get the job done better than anything else even remotely in the price range. Plus, they can be modded in a variety of different ways, and you don't feel bad like you would messing up a 500-1K dollar Busse or something.

I recall reading that EB started BK&T in the 80s, working out of his garage or something like that. Seems like his designs have been made by three different makers, with interim periods of unavailability. Hasn't been long that KBar's been cranking them out. That may be why they are not more widely known and my guess is that will be happening soon if it's not already, what with a steady and reliable supply. Also it is a practical, non-pretentious product. It's a quality tool, reasonably priced, that will last several lifetimes if given reasonable care. Usually you have to hunt a little for that.

As to the popularity of the forum well it's ...uh... interesting:)

Great product at a great price.

Plus, what other company namesake throws you a shindig at his own house once a year ?

Posts on the forum with his customers ?

Gives away tons of stuff ?

Backs his product 100%

And we wonder why it's popular ?

Could be a B. school case study in marketing. JMHO.

Becker products speak for themselves. Hold one in your hand and you will understand the popularity.

KaBar is so popular a brand overall now they completely sell out of runs of stuff and have to have extra runs scheduled. the zombies knives were flying off the press so fast, they were still warm from heat treat, that good. course, there is ebb and flow...

but mostly, they don't have to advertise much... word of mouth. magazines. a few large eTailers carry the stuff...

as to Becker? well, one the highlights of the KaBar designer lineup, many models, all solid, all terrific value in this economy

me? i'd like to see them for sale at local stores, but that would require even MORE output and inventory, and KaBar seems to be at capacity. busy busy busy.

plus we got at least 4 more models coming soon. it's nuts :>

I agree with all posters. I know they are popular, just surprised they aren't more popular. I have several of them and will get more. Great value, form over function design, uber-modability and very cool guy running the show? What else can we ask for? Now, where's my BK15?

my thoughts:

1. the esee forum disappeared from here but there are still those looking for hard use knives without the fluff...or high price. a quick look at the makers and becker/ka-bar is the only one left pretty much in the $100 and below range.
2. the whole "beckerhead" got invented and is now in members' signature lines help spread the word to the rest of the forum.
3. beckers are no nonsense, low bling working knives so it doesn't attract as many collectors as the other brands.
4. don't underestimate the power of a monthly contest/free knives in attracting more people here.

i still remember back in the day when it would take a week or more before one's post would move into the 2nd page. man, i feel old even though that was only 2 yrs ago!

As others have said, these knives are a great value, manufactured by a trusted company, and are solid designs. The ease of modding them also appeals to many.

Also, we have developed a very good community here in the Becker forum, which I am proud to be part of. On an average day, you can find threads showing people clearly using their knives as they were intended and sharing their skills, you can read how-tos for handle making, stripping, etching, grinding, and many other things, you can debate deep, philosophical truths or crack jokes, you can enter a contest to win a knife that is mailed to you from the designer himself, or enter a contest requiring you to dress like a woman or shave the BKT logo into your chest. Yeah, we have fun here.

I think Becker's are one of THE top 2 or 3 most well known knives.

My bad, I meant;
One of THE top 2 or 3 most well known brands among people that actually USE the knives they buy and put thought into what they want from their knife purchases.

I'm the only smartass around here.

The others are wannabe's.

:D
