Some of you may want to check your knives which you have cord wrapped the handles...

after 3-5 months I thought I'd remove the para-cord wrap I had done on my Necker Becker just for the heck of it, no rust under there, but the entire black coating on the handle had for lack of better terms...Bubbled up and was just overall coming off

I had no choice but to break out the sandpaper and try to work on it for awhile, afterwards I used a flat black paint to re-coat the blade as I live in Florida just 2 miles from the Gulf and Its important to me that the knife can somewhat hold up against the salt water when I will take it fishing this season.

Oh! So the water has already penetrated into the knive handle? Care to tell us wad type of handle it is?

AC,
The knife has never seen any type of water yet...salt or even tap water, that would make some sense if it had as it may have been a factor in the coating problem.

The Necker Becker is just a plain black coated blade, it is a one piece fixed blade. It is this black coating which came off

The cord wrap is just what many do aftermarket to wrap the plain handle to give it a better grip or feel.

I think the cord has some chemical substances in it! Hey btw, I keep hearing you all say that it is best to wrap a para cord around the handle of the knive. Could you guys tell me wad is a para cord, where I can get it, and Wad does it do?

Paracord is supposedly the stuff used on parachutes. Here's a pic of what I have on hand right now, finding it, as I do, a necessity for an outdoorsman.

You can use it for knife wrist thongs, weave it into belts, rifle slings, wrist bracelets, so you always have a stock of it when afield. Every hunting jacket/vest/backpack, daypack and my bug-out bag has a hank of it inside.

Best size is the 3/16". Any knife and gun show should have someone offering it for sale. Or Ebay.

I have never liked the use of the cord for knife handles. There are so many better time-proven materials for that job. Supposedly gives knives a 'tactical' look that some folks like.

You said you have plenty of it in all your packs and all, I am not sure how you use all of them! BTW, Any idea how can I buy paracord? Any specific type of shops sell them? Hey, do you guys recommend me to use those type of badminton anti-slip on my knive's handle?

Uses for paracord??? Let me see.. make an animal snare. Build a hunting blind or shelter. Replace broken boot laces. Fix almost anthing else. First aid, as for a tournicate, or making splints. Tying a knife to a stick and using it as an emergency spear, like for fishing. Double it up and make a deer drag. All kinds of woodscraft.

I see you are in Singapore. The stuff may be tougher to get there. Do you have Army/Navy surplus stores? I see the cord on ebay all the time.

Probably will get people who disagree with me about paracord's use as a knife handle. If it works for them, fine. I see some knife manufacturers that actually us it as a knife handle. Too cheap to build the knife right in my opinion.

Well, in my country, it is very difficult to get stuff that are military type. My government has a strict control over it. Some shops however do bring in Blackhawk stuff and other US made military gear. But they are all very EXPENSIVE!

BTW, can I find a paracord from a parachuting shop?

Let's do this the easy way... I have sent you an email, subject line: "paracord'. I'll send you some paracord and if you want to try wrapping a knife handle with it, fine.

Any of you other guys know of a good site showing how to wrap a knife handle?

at that point, and overall if i was using this knife in salt water, definitely i'd consider putting tool grip on the/over the entire handle, and probably put a lot of mineral oil on the blade, or stuff the sheath with silicone grease even.

good luck

Hey guys, I found a shop that sells cords, but not too sure if it's paracord. They are from a brand Petzl. They are actually rock climbing ropes. Is it ok? O mean, compatible?>
BTW textoothpk, how long and how thick is the cord that you are going to send me? Really a big thanks!

Hi Kdarmy,i am going to check my necker and see i'll let you know.Although you say it hasn't been near water could it possibly be moisture being absorbed due to humidity or something? The cord may suck it up and wick onto the handle. As i say i'll check mine as it has been wet.

Yeah, I'd like to hear if others have had this happen to theirs...

I tried painting the knife, looked nice but fit too snug in the sheath.

Final solution was to strip it down to bare metal, then I cold blued it...came out great, like it better know than it was new:D

Oh, BTW...to removing the coating....razor blade and acetone, took about an hour.

Keith

With the acetone, it was pretty easy....soak, scrap with razor, repeat. The black coating comes right off.

No scratches to speak of...The look of the blued blade looks much nicer now to me anyway, glad I had to do it really.

Seems to me that one possible idea is the para cord is absorbing your sweat and holding it next to the knife. basically it would be kind of like soaking it in a saltwater rag. also some people's sweat seems to be more harmful to steel than others. as far as cold blue goes it will look good but blueing gives no protection from rust. in another post someone took some plier handle dip and covered the handle in it for a pretty neat, comfortable handle. later, ahgar
