How would you use a BK9 to carve a snowflake for instance?

Put the BK9 in a vise. Make one by chopping a treestump halfway through, insert the knife edge up, and bind it tight with rope/cord/whatever.

Push the material to be carved down onto the BK9, whittling away at the stock until you have a snowflake.

Otherwise, you could just carve a REALLY BIG snowflake...
