Having gave my BK2 a nice bashing, I have noticed coating coming off (understandable). But I have noticed that exposed below are a whole bunch of grooves following along the edge (see photo). So those who are strippers here - did you have the same thing? If so how far up and along the blade does it go? It arkward to shift?

The groves go up the entire blade. They are just the machine marks made when they carve out the grind on the blade.

Everywhere except on the non-grinded flat parts. Most pronounced on the swedge.

That said, after prolonged usage, some of those will smoothen out along the edges. It's really a non-issue except for cleaning. Still much less annoying than coating though.

What knifejunkie said - if you ever strip the coating, you can polish them out with sandpaper but takes a little "elbow grease" as someone here in the BK&T subforum once told me. [emoji2]

Takes more than a little elbow grease. More like a bucketful. Sometimes it's worth it....sometimes not. On the BK2, I'd say use it like it owes you money. I tend to strip most of my knives, as I feel like the coating sticks to wood and I find my stripped blades are easier to use. And for food prep, IMO it's a must....but that's me. I do NOT polish my knives after stripping....though they don't tend to rust as quickly or easily if you do sand them, even if you can get the grind lines out at about a 600 grit. But it's VERY time consuming, and what you'll likely notice is there are plenty of other imperfections in the blade and it's damned difficult to get everything flat and looking good. I did this once to my BK7 that I modded....and that was a journey, lemme tell ya.

Started like this (after I ground out a complete re-profile):

......and ended like this after many hours of sanding with an aluminum block and a couple dozen sheets of wet/dry. Too many hours to count, so I didn't. This is up to 2000 grit then Flitzed.....and you can still see scratches! :

I'm NOT ready to do it again....yet....

Thanks for the replies - looks to me like stripping and trying to go allow fancy cosmetically costs lots of hours with little reward so not being worth it. I guess the best is to be a natural stripper.

Looking at the pics here though not hard to see why Ka-bar put on such a thickish, rough coating as it covers a multitude of sins!

I'm going to have a stripping party this week, then I will most likely send them with dex at blade show to get them parkerized

Less lines

No lines (a stack of elbow grease) but worth it for the BK2. A very nice looking blade stripped.

Wasn't this Elbow Grease of which you speak something that was in vogue before God invented the electric motor and buffing wheels?

You're right mate, but this was a sandpaper job, working my way through various grits. Would be much easier, I have done it before but I find the blades get super hot on a buffing wheel fairly quickly. This was a labor of love as it was my first Becker, donated by a Brother in law.

Looks like you used your Dremel Gassy! Which tool bits did you use on yours?

Heh....I bought mine already nicely stripped...with a great start on a beautiful patina. None of my personal elbow grease involved. ;)

If it were any other product I bet they would come stripped and charge you extra for a coating, but I guess they come coated to hide the 'sins'. I get it helps in rust prevention, but other colours or methods could be available somewhat.

I guess Ka-bar keep it black only as that probably sells to the Amateur Rambo types who think its all tactical and all that stuff. But as anyone knows they probably do keep their knife in a safe or in a box to show off on YouTube videos of their 'awesomeness ego' rather than use the thing. It always makes me laugh to see YouTube vids with knives that look new or without blemish and brag how tactical they are or how Zombie Killers they are great for and what mods and expensive bling they have to go with it. As we say over here "All the gear but no idea" Most would probably cry to Mama if they saw a real Zombie!

I used the sanding dremel bit on the inside area of the handle. In hindesight i should have taped it up and left the coating on under the handles.

I actually enjoyed the whole process it really wasnt a chore. somewhat theraputic.

Totally feel ya brother. That looks freaking awesome! Gotta get on my mods. Been so busy every day and every weekend since the gathering.

BK32 has a clear coat finish...

Yeah, clear coat and green scales. Probably comes with pink fanny pack instead of a sheath...

It's painfull what Ka-bar is doing out of Becker line. But not surprising. You just have to look around on this forum to see most are treating knives as jewelry rather than tools...

Sad really.

I would disagree, at least on this sub-forum....I think most of Ethan's knives are put to work daily - even some of the discontinued and rare ones. Hell, I use my Brute pretty regularly now, and I've seen all manner of beat on Patrol machetes, RBK's and such. As for the BK-2, or 32, or 22.....there's absolutely no reason to keep that trainwrecker of a knife in a safe of any kind....besides, any safe would get damaged when that thing prys it's way out ;).
