Frustrated by the unavailability of the BK1 and not willing to pay the high prices on ebay, I decided to make my own version of it. I brought it over to Ethan's gathering where Mr. Tackett graciously agreed to bring it to critical temp, quench in canola (in a quench tube made by Uncle E for it, as it wouldn't have fitted in the ammo can that was being used for quenching) then do a "snap" quick temper so the blade would arrive in one piece for me to finish the temper cycles at home.

Here it is with borrowed "Imperial" scales from my BK7, still shiny:

Testing the edge, poor palm didn't stand a chance

But it needed its own scales. I ordered maple burl from burlsource, then cut and epoxied with west system's g-flex (kinda looks like the battle droids from The Empire Strikes Back :D)

After lots of elbow grease and finished with tung oil...

Of course, it needs to cut stuff. 25 coconuts were sacrificed in the process of making my own coconut oil. The sweet spot is from belly to tip, as hits between belly and recurve resulted in a stuck blade, belly to tip hacks were clean

I hit concrete like 4 times, and at least 2 of the hits were unchecked. After the 4th hit I started to use the board as a chopping block. The edge exhibited very minimal damage

Brutey : 25, Coconuts : 0

That is awesome Zulu!

You did a great job on that Brute clone. Those scales are amazing.....

25 coconuts yielded...a jar of oil. I'm gonna keep on buying it at trader joe's

After the scales, it only needed new pants. Veg-tan Herman Oak leather and some kind of black dyed lizard were used for the task

good retention from the ring area, it has an unobstructed draw

I had an accident while wiping the blade with ferric chloride. I did not want a shiny blade, and after the coconut massacre I let it get stained by the water. Wiping it with a paper towel soaked with pcb gave it a beautiful coppery patina while darkening the existing stains. But while I was doing it I knocked the vial where I had it and some was soaked by the back side of the sheath. Unknown to me, the acid reacts with leather and dyes it black. After being pissed for a minute, I realized I could get creative with it and "painted" to my liking with the acid

After the triple loop lacing was done, I painted, then burnished the cutout bevels and accented the letters and numbers

this was a lot of work, and I really like how it came out. I can say that this knife will never leave my hands barring a natural disaster or theft. It was also HT'd over at Ethan's and the memories of that gathering will be with my forever, hoping to attend many more, so it has added value to me. Hope you guys like it!

I should have waited to comment till after you posted the sheath pictures as well.

That sheath is so nice and I have so many questions I don't even know where to start.

Keep up the great work Zulu!

Jeremy

One of the very best I've seen in this sub-forum, or anywhere else on this site!
