Beckerheads, do you hunt?

I hunt.....
Kind of a blanket statement for me. I was a sharpshooter in the Army for eight years and found hunting to be a relaxing way to keep my skills up when I got out. I am also part of the Mid-Atlantic-Primitive-Skills-Soc so my kills are used far more than average. We tan hides and furs and use bones for tools and flint knapping equipment, and tendons for backing bows and wrapping arrows, etc...
I also shot on a pistol team for a few seasons and that actually got me interested in small game hunting with a .22 handgun for the challenge. I never thought much of squirrel as a quarry but I have to admit that its been growing so quickly on my that I take a pistol on all my hunts and as soon as we get a deer I'm right off into the woods stalking grey squirrels. I shot half a dozen last time I went out. Four were head shots and two were center chest shots because they stood up and looked at me.

this picture both impresses the hell out of me and disturbs me at the same time hehe

I remember seeing Howard Hill shooting aspirin tablets thrown into the air.

I've got DVDs with that Howard doing that stuff and I've seen Byron Ferguson do it many times. Never got to see Howard in person though. That's some cool stuff. :)

I started hunting around 13 years old when my uncles first took me. Since then I've really got to enjoy bird hunting. Something about knocking them dove and quail out fo the sky is just really satisfying! Wanting to try duck and turkey next season.

I actually only started hunting again last season after taking almost 4 years off. My daughter just turned 11 years old and decided she wanted to try hunting. So I got my licence and took her on a dove hunt to see if she would get squimish with the birds I shot down. In the end, she helped me collect the birds and clean them and was still excited to do it herself! So in December she took and completed the Hunter's Education course offered by our state Game and Fish department and she is chomping at the bit to hunt! I bought her a Rossi Youth gun with interchangeable .22 and 20 gauge barrels. It turns out, she may be a better shot then I am!

Next season will be the first time carrying a Becker with me. Carried a buck last season. Definetly will have my Eskabar with me as its my EDC, and working out a way to carry my BK2 also. Looking for a way to carry my side arm on my strong side (concealed of course), and my BK2 on my left. I think the weight should balance out as they just about weight the same.

I hunt deer, have not gotten one with a bow. Maybe this year. Gun season is my godfather's Ruger Mk77 30-06 for sentimental reasons. I usually carry a single shot 12ga for squirrels or birds. Missed turkey season this year. I have a Ruger 700 SPS TAC for coyotes...

I carry a BK11 in the woods - cleaned and skinned a whitetail last year.

I used to go for Whitetail, Mulies, ducks\geese, rabbits etc. Got away from it though.

Having grown up on a farm in central Ohio, this was standard initiation for enrollment into the "Ohio Farm Boy's Hunting Guild" . . . :)
Some of my best memories of childhood were the hunting and fishing trips on Saturday with my dad, uncle, & grandpa. The evening was spent sitting at the table in my grandma's kitchen listening to dad & my uncle replay the day's events for my mom and grandma, while whatever game we had taken that day was cooking on her stove, along with biscuits, gravy (with mandatory lumps, of course), and some sort of vegetable. My best birthday was my 12th when my only present was a single .410ga. shell that dad gave me & told me I was ready to go out alone if I wanted to.
I am very fortunate for my son is just as addicted to the outdoors as I am. Thanks for reminding me of some great times from my childhood.
Be safe.

Awesome..... Thanks for sharing that Brother!!

Sorry didn't mean to mislead you. What I should of said was that I have seen pics of Howard Hill shooting asprin. I saw those pics 20 years or more ago and they were old even then. I think they were from the 1950's. Shooting asprin in the air with arrows from a recurve bow with no sights or anything WTF! :)

Thanks!

For the record they were shared with a group of boy scouts, cooked over a camp fire. The tails were turned into string silencers for my bows and the furs were all tanned and used to wrap the bows handles. Nothing goes to waste, even with these little guys.

lol the disturbing part is because i have squirrels in my yard, ALOT of squirrels,
i hate the little tree rats (ruined every birdhouse i put up). it conjures images of me shooting (probably missing) a bunch of squirrels inside the city limits hehe

the impressed part...see above :)

Amazing stuff isn't it? I've got video of him and some REALLY FOOLISH dude doing the William Tell thing. The guy is on his knees facing away from Howard about 8 or 10 yards away. Hill shoots an apple and a plum (if I recall correctly) off the guy's head and pretends he's about to shoot a cherry or grape or something. Crazy.

Frigger could hunt though. His life list includes 3 elephants, 13 crocs, (and TONS of other stuff). Most impressive to me though is his estimate of 1500 rabbits - with a longbow. I've killed a handful of rabbits with bows (some with recurves, one or two with a longbow) but 1500? Sheesh! :)

Snakedoc, it's just a shame that my son's generation does not have the opportunity that we had in the 50's & 60's to enjoy the outdoors. He just recently passed his test for his motorcycle license, which we have "debated" strongly, & his view is I had one "when I was growing up" . . . I pointed out to him mine was in a time when the population was less, there were fewer drivers on the road, & definitely did not have cell phones, texting, fax machines, etc. as distractions while driving.
Now I know how my mom & dad felt when I bought my first bike . . . . :)
Thanks for the comment, & a big thanks to Mr.Whitetailfanatic for his idea for this thread.
Be safe.

Recent transplant to Socal and would love to get back out there to go after hog and turkey.Major problem being finding non-toxic rounds for the condor zone. Back in central IL. I hunted phesant and turkey. A lot more place to hunt in socal but but between family and funds hunting is limited at the moment.
I would be carrying my 870 12ga and my Taurus 4" .44 mag along with my BK7 and BK11.
I need to get back out there.

I'm a deer hunter.
I want to start rabbit hunting as well but I just don't have the time these days.
I'm looking forward to the becker tweeners as potential hunting knives

I'm more of a fisherman, but I like to hunt. I don't have as much time for it as I used to, but I hope to remedy that in the next few years.
Turkey hunting is my absolute favorite. I also will hunt deer, dove, and quail. I wouldn't mind doing some boar hunting, but have never tried it.
If you hunt BTW, you're probably going to want that clip point Tweener in your pack next year. Or maybe the mini-Camp. Or maybe that drop point. :D

Oh, and this guy hangs out in a nearby state park. I saw him a lot last winter. :D

A most dangerous prey indeed, the deer with LASER EYES !!! BOOM, boom, BOOM, boom (kettle drum)

Sounds like a sneeze away from a 25-year stay in a federally funded hotel system. :p

I never did, but always wanted. You can't just go hunting in Germany. You have to buy your own hunting grounds, get a gun license, get a hunting license, and pay thousands of € a year just to be allowed to hunt and a few 100 for every kill. You can't feed a family by hunting here. You have to have a well-paying job, hunting is an extremely expensive hobby.

I have only hunted deer for the last 5 years of my 47 years. I'm not a very good hunter, but i have taken 2 deer. No bucks yet. Butttttt, i have lots of friends that are great hunters & great friends, that give me lots of deer. Last year i put 5 in the freezer. I cut up my own. Can't afford to pay someone to do it for me. By cutting up my own, i also get to use a lot of my different knives to do it. You find out what works good & what don't real quick. So one hobby kinda feeds/helps the other. I never liked the taste of venison while growing up, but found out it was because it was not butchered/cooked/prepared properly. My daughter also hunts now. She is my outdoorsgirl. Trying to get her to join the forum, but no luck yet.

My idea of hunting (which i don't get to do often enough) is go out and sit in/on the edge of the woods with the cell phone off and a rifle in my hands and watch/listen to the world.
If something tasty looking wanders in front of me, I'll consider adding it to my larder.
not too many squirrels around my parts, but the bunny population is good for the first time in a couple of years, so i may need to dust off the .22 and get in some practice between now and October.
