Getting tired of the do you sharpen your BK2 with a sharpmaker or a river rock threads so lets talk up the things that go bang!

I used to love the AR's until I picked up a 600 dollar Romanian RPK, this thing is fun! And zero malfunctions.

I've got a Romanian SAR-1 that is a lot of fun.
It had a soft hammer issue, but that's been corrected with a nice USA Tapco hammer.
Can't beat the AK variants as far as bang for your buck.
I also have a S&W M&P15 that I've been tricking out a little. However, the AK is still more fun.

There is no reason why one cannot have both.

Though if I had to keep one or the other, I'd hold on to the AK variants.

I've owned, shot and competed with both. Ak's are very robust and it is a good short range round to me. For accuracy, comfort and mods definitely the AR in my opinion...

I've also shot and handled both, like both, since I'm not in a any type of combat situation, I prefer (actually like) the AR, American, lightweight, more accurate, and smaller. They are both great weapons.

alright, let's see some Beckers in here as bayonets ;)

well, there IS a Becker bayonet, but we shall not speak of it here.

mmm...

so, AKs, they work, or they don't, and you hit them with a rock. several friends of mine have had to do relatively extensive smithing to fix "new in box" cosmolined imports. $200-300 in that condition, and many hours fixing. or you can get nice working ones.

or even MODERNS variations. you can get everything from hopup kits to full-on new made models (like the new SIG). if someone were to give you 10,000 rounds for free, awesome!

AR15... some of those are amazingly accurate, and some can be had cheap. many are quite finicky i hear. have to be lube? always?

me? i'm partial to the old school FAL. would love a paraFAL someday. or an RFB. or many many others :) SIG makes some nice 223s and 556s i hear, esp the ones prior to say 2008, post 2011 onwards ;) hah.

but mostly i love my 22s :) when the zombies come, the 22 will be putting zombie meat on the table probably more than anything else.

I've got an AR-15 Bushmaster. I'm partial to the AR simply because of using them in the military and work. I've shot a few AKs and know they are very reliable. I would even like to purchase one sometime. For the time being, I'm sticking with my Bushmaster. Take care Zeke!

Both!
AR for small and far away,
AK for big and close.
But if you really want to have some fun, get a .22 LR AR and run a million rounds through it every week without having to worry about breaking the bank. My Spike's Tactical paid for itself last summer in ammo savings and doubled that in fun!

How 'bout a Mini 14

This puppy is fun fun fun .223 with an old school look.

You can see it in action in my "plinking" threads. Got together with
a fellow BF member Jbarbaresi and threw some lead down range for sure :D

I've got a Russian SKS. Does that count? :)

I think the SKS has better accuracy potential than the AK. However, you have to mod it to take larger / replaceable mags - or just use stripper clips with the fixed mag.

They all have compromises:

Carbines:

AK - when they were $350 they were a way better deal than the AR. Price has gotten a lot closer. Ammo still cheaper.

AR - more accurate, more modular, 6.8SPC evens out the ballistics. Ammo pricier for 233, way higher for 6.8. Needs to be kept clean.

Main battle rifles:

HK91 - guns are a little overpriced, cheapest magazines on earth, guns are heavy. Otherwise, kickass.

M14 - pricey, heavy, very accurate, stripper clips, American classic

Bro, if you were a free horse, I'd look in your mouth.

M14's use magazines, always have M1 Garands use strippers.
6.8 as is, right this second, is a fad not a consideration.
HK91's while pricey are the same subject of variants that all the rest have fell to, you get the CAI models on the low, low.

:thumbup:Other than those points, good post bro.

i have not been a fan of the AR platform since the first time I had to qual on one back in the mid-80's. The fact that I can close the bolt by slapping the buttstock makes me twitch.
I miss my SKS.
I love my Mini-14.
I'm looking for a low cost AK/Saiga or an SKS for a tractor gun - something to help solve the feral dog problem in my area.

AR. More versitile and modular, with a ton of companies making aftermarket parts, and stuff, its a builders dreams.

AK, tuff, tuff gun. Real workhorse.

Gotta go with the AR.

Moose

Both. :D

But it depends on the situation.

If I have to hike the rifle and ammo around all day, I'll take the AR.

ar-15 for me: ambidextrous, it's a lego for grown ups when it comes to modularity and ergonomics, accurate - anyone who's never shot a gun in their lives before can learn how to shoot a man-sized target at 200 yds consistently within an hour.

the ar needs to run wet...well lubed is not the same as need to be kept clean though. the need to keep it clean is a common myth and unless speaking from first-hand experience, this regurgitated info needs to stop.

pat roger's "filthy 14" bcm rifle was shot 31,000+ rounds with just one cleaning: http://www.bravocompanymfg.com/v/vspfiles/assets/images/filthy14_oct10.pdf. this is just one of many examples from reputable instructors/schools who've proven time and time again that an ar will run reliably while dirty.

i go to a pa range all the time. i welcome those who wants to test that cleaning myth for themselves with my own rifles, just bring your own ammo...my rifles haven't been cleaned in a year and it's running just fine.

Either one is fine. I've had both and like both. Right now I'm running FAL's and AR's but if you are capable and have a rifle that functions as it should, either system if capable. Whatever your trained on.
