Beckerheads, What Are Your Fire Making Tools?

Heat gun.
Really like My strike force ferro rod, also use a swedish firesteel. Didn't know there was a difference between misch metal and ferro rods and what not. Just though ferro rods were made of misch metal.
Either way they both work to start fires. generally use pitchwood for tinder, sometimes for the whole fire depending if it's raining or not.

I use a fire steel and use it on the backside of my BK2. I want to start experimenting with making different types of ready made tinders.

Zippo lighter with a butane insert, the metal liner protects it from breaking (like a bic could) and provides resistance from rain. Its also a jet lighter so it will light fully saturated tinder in a under a min.

I have a firesteel for 'fun factor' but thats all.

i also have a butane zippo that i carry around, but i figured it would be better to have something as a backup.

now to just play the waiting game until i can test them out.

I have a Strikeforce that now lives in a box, i have my LMF Army model on me all the time along with a Bic lighter and some bit of old bike tube.

The jimping on my BK11 and BK2 throw sparks like crazy!

Ive got the following to choose from.

Wetfire Tinder
Primus firesteel and AH-1 as a striker
A little magnesium/flint rod.
Exotac Matchcap with some regular kitchenmatches in it.
ESEE Firekit, the regular version.
Primus Powerlighter
LMF Firesteel

do you always carry all of them?

Or is there one you reach for more than the other?

I dont carry all of them at once. I see them as different tools for different conditions.

The grey Primus firesteel sees the most pocket-time along with a couple of the WetFire tinder tabs as backup. The Powerlighter is pretty nice too, makes lighting moist tinder or my multifuel stove a breeze. It produces a flame thats 2300 F hot, which sets most thing on fire pretty fast.

LMF makes some good firesteels. Ive used the heck out of the red LMF rod. I prefer them over the ESEE firekit, which is the item that sees the least pocket-time. Its not that its bad, i just prefer the others over it.

The Exotac Matchcap used to come along as backup before i got the Powerlighter. I still comes along sometimes on dayhikes and such.

I have several different fire steels, Light my Fire, Going gear and the Rat fire kit. For tinders I have fat wood, dryer lint, pj cotton balls. I also carry the Exotac Matchcap with some windproof matches as a last resort. They all work and I carry a back up of some sort, usually a mini bic.

I've been looking through the pics and i noticed the little arrow head in a few pics in this thread as well as other threads.

Its my first time really seeing it so excuse me if this is a stupid question but what exactly is it?

Its not a stupid question. Its the ESEE arrowhead as seen here: http://www.eseeknives.com/arrowhead.htm

Many members, including myself, use it as a firesteel striker. It has alot of other uses...you can rig it in a trap, use it as a spear-point, etc. But IMO its mostly a cool thing to have.

Its an arrow head made by ESEE. They ran a promotion a while back which gave them out for the price of shipping when people upgraded their bladeforums membership, so a lot of people upgraded, got one, and use it for a firesteel striker or in a survival kit.

You can buy them for like 10 bucks from most retailers.

EDIT: Damn, PropThePolecat beat me to it!

I keep trick birthday candles, tons of scripto disposable lighters, jute twine, Coleman Fuel Tabs, etc, etc. I love making fire. I think I was a pyro in a former life.

LOL! I think you're a pyro in THIS life!!

Carry both a LMF firesteel and a UST Sparkie. Tinder is PJ Cottonballs, charcloth, and cottongrass heads (it takes a spark so violently you almost have to dilute it with some other slower burning fiber!)...actually, I'm not an official Beckerhead, hope you don't mind my posting...

I Have a strikeforce in pack. I also carry a coughlins in my LM wave sheath. I actually cary a MINI kit in my LM sheath. Maybe I'll do a video on that some time soon.

Dang! Thats some crazy spark action! I might have to order one of those. The guy who owns Goinggear was in my Survival Basics class at the Pathfinder school. He was the one with the most fancy gizmos and gear (guess why?). Nice Guy...gave us all Rite-in-the-rain pads and GG T-Shirts. Got a 10% off code from him if you dont already have it.

I would lobve the 10% off code.

I see your a couple of hours away in Cbus. ever get out to wayne national?
