Admittedly I am from another country.
But if I was going into combat I likely wouldn't carry my 7. Out of my knives right now my Ka Bar is probably the one I would carry. Maybe an ESEE depending on which branch. Although I don't really know how it is and if I heard my troops wanted better knives I'd pay to give it to them.
Anyone currently serving right now?
I'd like to hear 2 cents from someone with boots on the ground.
I don't carry my 7 just because its a little big for EDC. If I was going off the FOB, however, I'de have it strapped to my leg. I EDC a BK2 everyday since it arrived here. I have used it often. Now, I am a support Soldier, so I mostly see manual labor and office work to support our Combat Arms. I EDC my BK2 because I need a tough knife to perform any task I need it to, and so far, it has. I pair a BK14 with it also on a daily basis. Oh, I also keep a BK11 hooked to the front of my ballistic vest when I fly.
As for what they issue us... I can't speak for the other branches, but the Army only issues a Gerber multi-tool and a seatbelt cutter. Some commanders will buy a Gerber Gator for their troops, but mine didn't. Every knife I have with me I either purchased here, had delivered or sent, or brought with me. (I have quite a few here.)
So, as far as the ultimate "troop knife", just like everything else, it depends on your job. I need a tough knife, a medic needs a delicate sharp knife, an infantryman needs a fighter style/utility knife.
