Becoming a knife maker

I live in Durango Colorado and am looking to learn the art of knife making. Any suggestions on how to go about it without reinventing the wheel? I have only seen one local maker here in town that is referenced on the internet. Please help me out here folks...new guy needs a new gig and wants to have fun at work.

If you have a local...then why not ask him to help out. I know I would.

To answer the origional question:
The school run by the American Bladesmith Society ,located in Washington Ark., is a great place to get started. Go to the ABS website for details and class schedules. If you can swing it, there is probably no better way to start.

Realize that you won't be making money at knife making for a good while, and may never show a profit. Most of us don't expect to ,or care about it. It is a hobby that allows you to sell what you make. The profits, plus a lot of your own money, will usually go into bigger and better equipment. Don't run out and buy everything you see and read about. Some files and 1084 will be a great start. You will kmow what you need as your skills develop.

Welcome to the BF.
