After reading some of the other posts I noticed some folks when they started out were accepted as students of established knife makers. This seems like a great option so how would I go about doing this? Obviously, I can't just walk in and say "sign me up", but would it be a good idea to walk in and ask local smiths if they are interested in that sort of thing? Thanks again.

First step would be to fill in some more information about yourself in your profile. If folks don't know where you are, they can't help find somebody nearby. Also, a bit of info about yourself will help folks understand a little more about YOU and offer better assistance. For example, if you're a tool & die maker by trade, the methods of explanation and examples given may be very different than if you work with computers, etc. A little background goes a long way.

What Deker said plus you just need to put some time in around here. Get to know folks and you'll find knife makers are some of the nicest most giving people you'll ever meet.

Thanks for the responses L6 and Deker. Well the bio is complete. I am very new to knife making and looking for where to start (tools, how to etc.) It seems the easiest method is the stock removal method??? Any words of advice on how to get started would be wonderful. This seems like a great hobby and I can't wait to begin.

I notice you are an educator. With school starting up soon if not already, this may be of no interest. We will be holding the Fall Trackrock Hammer-in over in Blairsville, GA. the weekend of Sept. 22nd. You are welcome to attend. There will be several different forge/anvil setups you can look at and study as well as several very accomplished knifemakers present to help you understand what, why, when, and where. We had between 12 and 14 anvils ringing and singing at the spring event and the fall event is usually more popular. I'm sure you would have a good time and may even get a chance to get your hands a little dirty. To find out a few more details about the event go to www.georgiaknifemakersguild.com or you may pm me and I'll send you more info. Don't be shy about coming, we have a very congenial group and this type hammer-in is all about sharing techniques and information.

most makers will welcome you right in with no problem just email them and get to know them some..
I welcome everyone into my shop as long as I'm here :)
where you are in TN I'd start finding makers close to you.. and go from there..
if you like traveling, come on down :D
My wife is a teacher we both have something in common

To bad you didn't live closer to New England. Gary (Wolf) Rua and myself will be starting knife making classes every other Saturday, starting in September.
It will cover making damascus, forging, grinding and all the other aspects.:D

That would be very educational and enjoyable, George. As much as we razz you here, I really do wish we live closer together. You better warn those new makers about your HT Relish upon their arrival, though. Spontanious combustion could be a very serious consideration. Gotcha again, IG.
