Any body have good luck in getting bees to go away?
Just had a hive take up residence in the bathroom vent pipe in the house. It's the 4" pipe with the exhaust fan on one end and a open vent on the other with a 4ft space in between. I would rather not kill them but they can't stay.
Is ther anything I can put on the fan end to encourage them to go someplace else?
Thanks for your help.

I have no idea if it would work. But if your fan blows out maybe you can make it unpleasent for them with smoke... Worst come to worst You can block both sides and stick some dry ice in there. Just make sure you do it at night. If you smoke them out expect them to be pissed so no family around.. If you got protective gear then just break the hive and drop it into a box and take it to where they would be safe.. Or maybe you can find a bee keeper that would come and take them off your hands.

He's right. You have to get the queen.

The smoke won't do much, they get over it pretty quickly, it just works to mask the alarm pheromone . That dry ice makes a bunch of C02 which would kill the bees if there was enough of it. Are you sure they are bees?
Most of the time, as a beekeeper, we get callls for "bees" that are really yellow jackets. Are you sure they are honey bees? Do they have yellow legs? Where are located, state wise?

If you get a beekeeper, make sure he has insurance as they have to sometimes tear apart the side of the house.

Most beekeepers will come out and remove them, sometimes they even keep them in which case I don't think they charge for the service. I got stung on my finger last night! My middle finger is swollen and itches like the devil!

Where do you live? They might not have a lot of time left if the weather gets cold where you're at.

I have them in the wall, next to the exhaust. I have some blue-board still showing on a very small spot (not visible from the road) and they ate a hole in it and started entering through a gap between sheathing boards (very old house). I can't suck them out with a vacuum because they are residing in a wall filled with blown cellulose insulation. They are not Honey Bees and are not Bumble Bees. They LOOK like Carpenter Bees - BIG, BEEFY bees, not "fat-looking" like a Bumble Bee, but BIG, with HAIRY bodies. They get into the house on warmer days so I have to figure something out before Spring.

As not "not killing them," I am as dependent upon Honey Bees as any of us. I have them to thank for pollinating my orchard, for one thing, but the Carpenter Bees,... I have killed a few and it's not all that easy. Some say they are not aggressive but I beg to differ. I have had them chase me all over the yard and the "one-shot" Wasp and Hornet spray just staggers them, they shake it off, fly away and come back.

As for the proper defense tool to have handy when you put yourself in a compromising situation with "the BIG Bees," one word; "Badmitten Racket." OK, that's two words, but if you have to go armed, "use enough racket." Do not be surprised if your neighbors don't get out of the car the next time you see them and when they gently steer the conversation around to the date they saw you wildly flailing a racket at apparently nothing as your did a mad, savage and violent dance about the yard while screaming obscenities.

Thanks for your help guys.
So far I have contacted a few exterminators and they all want around $200 to come out and kill the bees and that wouldnt include removal.
Well I figure I can kill them and do the removal since they are just in a vent pipe and I have access to both ends of the pipe.
I was really hoping to find a way to drive them away but it doesnt look like that is going to pan out. The wife wants them gone NOW.
Lucky for me I don't think I have a complete Hive. I am in Yorba Linda Ca. where the fires were last week and this is probably a displaced bunch. It is possible that their hive went up in flames along with the queen and this bunch has no place to go and no queen.
I got the poison recomended for bees for $9 (the same used by the exterminators) and will give them a good dusting when it is cool and dark. They should all be in the pipe and not too active by then.

If you have some kind of engine you could hook the exhaust to the wall. The fumes will definitely kill them so long as you get it nice and full. Just be careful not to gas yourself in the process.

Don't feel bad about killing them. they are a dangerous pest and could spread to your neighbors if you don't take care of them.

Totally agree on the badminton racket. As children, we suited my brother up in a parker with a diving mask and snorkel for the very purpose of administering a vicious thrashing with one of those. He had many layers of clothing on, all taped up round the holes, and armed with a home made flamethrower and a badminton racket he set about his mission. It worked a treat. We blew up the nest and entered him into the fray. Our flamethrower was too simple and you couldn't easily do a wet shot followed by a hot with the big gloves on, so flying ones weren't killed outright. But it did take the wings clean off ready for payback with the gift of stamping. Meantime the flailing racket strained those that got too close for comfort. Happy days.
