Hey All,

Been busy trying to better my work and trying to offer more options, I am far from ready to offer this yet. This is the first one I have ever carved, it is far from perfect, but I think its a pretty good start. The carving is really fun to do but it takes alot of work and even more skill. Just wanted to put it out there and see what you guys think, the floral patterns are the simplest to learn and practice with. Any advise is always welcome.

This is the same piece just different light, trying to show the depth of it.

feel free to practice on the piece I have with you right now man, this looks like it is far from your first attempt. my hasiya needs floral patterns on its pants.

That's beautiful Pugs. It requires artistry to lay out the pattern. Do you use a template or something or just good at drawing flowers?

I thought about stock carving years ago but I have zero artistic talent, can't draw a picture of something and make it look like what it's suppose to be. I guess some people have it, some don't.

You got it for sure whatever it is.

Nice work.

You got some serious skill if this is far from perfect. Sweet carving

Thank you very much

Hmm now there's an idea, Ill try some more on scraps then maybe give it a whirl, but your right it would be a good idea on this particular blade.

Nice depth effects on the petals.

Thanks Steve, that's just one of the hard parts, but you need the depth to get the effects.

Thanks Brother, I do use a template per say, you kinda trace the pic with a tracing paper for leather, then use a stylus to transfer it to the leather, that's the easy part, then you have to do the cutting and all the detail work for the right effects. Its very cool so far and im working on a few thing now so we will see how they come out.

There in lies the artistry part. I tried a template but trying to make the high parts high and the low parts low and get the proper relief (I think that's what they called it in the woodcarving for dummies volume 13) is the tricky part.

I think you got it figured out. Go ahead and whittle on Gehazi's. He'll be our test pilot.

Pugs, Once again I think you are more than welcome to "experiment" on any leather work you ever do for me. :D
always something gorgeous AND functional. Love it sir!

Why thank you Shavru, very much appreciated.

Dang Pugs! You got a little bit of everything going on. That opens up a whole new dimension to your already fantastic work! I can see a big skull and crossbones on a black AKB sheath already! Wow:thumbup: Cant wait to see where this goes!

Nice work pugs.
is it possible to get a leather sheath made with a British army woodland DPM insert of like denim or like NYCO?

Always thinking my man, have to keep it fresh and fun, your almost scary man, or you can read minds, I have a skull in the works as we speak, but just for practice first but wow I think you know me pretty good.

Thanks man, Im sure we could do something to make it work.

Very nice. It is not easy to get that good of a finish! Well done.

Thank you sir

Very nice work, Pugs, especially since it's the first you've ever carved.

What often happens when someone develops a new skill is that maybe two or three come out great and one gets spoiled. After a while the spoilage rate goes down. If you worry about spoiling a good scabbard while you're still in "practice mode," you might do the carving on an add-on piece, such as a wide frog or a leather piece that gets attached to the main scabbard.

Your scabbards are going to be even more popular with carvings like this. I can imagine a dragon carving running the full length of a khukuri scabbard, maybe matching one of those carved handles that we might see from Kumar or Sher, or an old Bura blade.

yep, if these pants work out, more pants will be required for my antiques and a few of my HI

David you might be on to something there, but I think im very far from that point yet, but im going to give my scrap work some serious attention to get better than attempt a full lenght dragon, but will do a head for now.

Man let me tell ya, my head is going non stop right now and you will have something very cool. You already are going to have something I have yet to do for a HI, so stand by man

Good job! Carvings are hard to do and take lots of practice. I did it once or twice in scouts back when I was a kid and it didn't look that good.

What leather did you use for the carving?

Good work! Looks great, not perfect? Looks pretty gosh darn perfect to me.
