Been eyeing a wicked edge for years, tax return coming

Ok I have one, now that you mention full flat grinds. Half my collection is spyderco and I'd say 1/3 of that is ffg. What's the trick? Glue it to a block of wood? Take it out of the handles and mount it by the radius?

Youtube has some great videos. Here is one of FFG spyderco PM2. He shows putting it in vice also you will see a great thing after you find proper spot using a advanced alignment tool super easy to go back to same position.

That's perfect as the millie PM2 and Manix2 are my main carries. The WE130 even comes with that head, which seems to do the trick. Oh boy I can't wait.

I don't have a wicked edge but I can tell you from experience small diamonds or other small and flat stones in a guided setup don't work all that with recurves or hawkbills.

My preference for those knives is a Sharpmaker or any crock sticks setup really.

The wicked edge stock stones work just fine for light to medium recurves. The reason being that the edges are curved and not a sharp 90°.

They also have one stone specifically for curved blades: https://wickededgeusa.com/collectio...grit-fine-600-grit-stones-for-curved-blades-1

I personally am horrible with crock sticks. Even worse on a flat stone that is why I went with guided system. Wicked Edge truly is great biggest barrier I think is cost not everyone can justify it. If you can it is a amazing system.

If you are good with the sticks or even better flat stones you have a ton of options since you don't need guided system. Wicked Edge I can get mirror edge repeatedly and I could never do that with out guided system personally.

For extremely delicate sharpening like pocket knives the WE is about as good as you can get. It'll give you extreme accuracy without much room for error.

That said, I haven't used my WE in years. Although I don't carry pocket knives much anymore as I have a titanium box cutter tool that does everything I need.

For sharpening though, I have found the Tormek T4 wet stone to be the absolute best sharpening device I've ever used and I've owned and used around 6 different systems and methods. It cant run wild and scratch a knife if you're not careful and the knife sharpener attachment isn't perfect but it's done 10" blades down to small 3" paring knives without much effort. I can easily shave hair off my arm with just a few mins of work. I usually touch knives back up on the Spyderco Triangle Sharpener to get the bite back on if they have lost a bit.

Do you mean it can run wild, or were you listing that as a strength?

I think strength as if you get knife locked in and guide rods locked in. I think he means "run wild" as going all over on blade scratching. It is easy to do if doing say a flat stone and scratch knife up. With WE locked on guide rod and knife it's hard to get off the edge and scratch knife up assuming you have it set up correct.

Well heck I bought one. 1.2k on their site for the Pro Pack III, all the bells and whistles. It was cheaper than eBay and it came with the case! Will edit this post to show before and after result with some knives then.

I think you will love it once you get the motion down it truly is a calming thing to do. There is a break in on the stones so you will only get better results once stones are broken in.

Hmm, how log is the break in and can I break them in quicker with high carbon steel/iron?

I was hoping someone else would answer with a good number, it seems to vary between person by looking at WE's forums. What I did was buy a few cheap knifes (10ish dollar knifes) and did multiple sharpening. I did different angles of one over 20 , one at 20, and then at 15-17 on last time with the knife.

Doing that I got 3 uses of each stones doing multiple angles. Guessing I did around 5 knifes with multiple sharpening on each. I'm guessing I did more then was needed but also was enjoying getting use to sharpener so kept going.

It took me about 8 to 10 knives for the stones to really break in fully. They worked fine prior to that but after 8 or so knives, they're really amazing now.

Congrats on the 130. I have the same model and it's amazing. The cam lock clamp is a thing of beauty. The system is pretty much full proof once you get used to it. I take photos of all my knives in the clamp. Helps with set up later. I use the guide but find photos help a bit as well for repeatabilty. I can't remember what the Pro Pack III comes with but definitely look into the ceramic stone and strops.

Also, check out the Wicked Edge Forum on their site. Tons of useful info and help there. There are a few guys there that are extremely knowledgeable.

I want to add that during break in you should spray the stones with soapy water or windex while they are still "rough". You should also use some cheap knives and focus specifically on using the first and last inch of the stones, if you just use the stones like normal the middle part might break in faster then the ends and this could cause an inconsistent finish for a bit.

Oh this is exactly what I'll do. I'm going to pick up some knives they have at the grocery store and ask my mom for old kitchen knives. Should cost me 50 in all. I'll get my skills down because it's in the shape of a real knife too. Thanks to ksnives too, I should have multiquoted :)

I was one of those people for a few years that wondered how much better a WE could be to a KME. I had the chance to grab one about 6 weeks ago and in the roughly 2 dozen sharpenings I've done in that time frame, its has blown me away. The precision and repeatable results IMO are incomparable. Stones are more expensive for sure and that sucks but the quality of them is what softens the blow a bit for me. I picked up a WE 100 ProPack with 8 grits, 2 strops, paperstone base and everything else that comes with it for $425 when Ebay had the 15% coupon.

Nice, again I'll report how well it works for me and give a special thread to how it treated my recurves with just the straight paddles. Be warned in about a week I'll make it look like a flood because I'll want the ceramic 1000/1500s :P
