I was getting really pissed the last couple, three days!
I couldn't post, couldn't see half the pix and had to click on the damned refresh button over and over and over again in order to be able to even read the threads!
Then when I would get half way through the threads the damned computer would lock up on me and I would have to turn it off manually and then wait for it to reboot.
I kept calling my DSL Tech Support and got a voice telling me that they were having problems with people connecting in St Louis and surrounding area. Yesterday it was in Tulsa and different areas and today in Houston and surrounding areas!
Then today I call 'em and say "continue" after the voice quits talking.
Was on the damned phone for two hours or so with tech support.
The finally said it was my firewall along with corrupted files that was causing my problems. They're sending me a new disc so I can get the dreaded Yahoo Browser again but I'll still use IE.
I disabled the firewalls and was able to connect but then I enabled them again and I'm still here! WTF?!?!?!?
Hell! I've had the firewalls every since I've been on a computer and had a friend tell me I needed one and recommended ZoneAlarms!!!!
And it's working with both ZA and Norton firewalls up now. I don't get it. Can anyone explain it too me?

I had a few emails that didn't get through for some reason until I got to the Yahoo email today so if you sent mail and I didn't answer or if you send me mail until i get it all ironed out and I don't answer within a few days at least you can figure that it's still on Yahoo and I'll Maybe get it when I get there again.
I will try to check it fairly often though, every day.:)

Sounds like you got a bad case of "Gremlins". In computer speak that means you got problems, but who knows what kind or where they are. Or even if it's your computer or the ISP that has the "Gremlins". Only thing I know for sure is, never do anything that lets the smoke out of the computers case. If you do it will never work again.:D
Oh, yeah, I also use ZoneAlarm. Upgraded to the new one with anti-virus protection.

I hear you, bro: I'm probably going to need a new computer soon - I'm still running Windows 98 2nd edition which they either will or already have stopped supporting. It wipes my address book regularly about once every 4 to 6 weeks.

Then maybe I can move all my stuff over and then have this one wiped and an updated OS like the new one installed and keep this for a backup.

Well it seems I'm not the only one with the same problem. There is at least one other and he happened to post on one of the Zone Alarm's Forums yesterday now.
Ever since he downloaded to the newest upgrade he started having the same exact problems I was having. I had kept the install files of some of the older versions so I deleted the current ZA and downloaded the upgrade before this last one. It Worked!!!!
Here I am with my firewall up posting away! I am now a happy camper again.:D
At least until the next condamned thang goes wrong with this condamned computer! ;) :D

Yvsa, hope it stays sorted, can absolutely relate to your frustration and anger, been there done that, many times. Rod

I use wireless...the only point visible from the net is my router. Folks can attack it all they want as it's nothing *but* a router...nothing there to get to as long as I keep my settings correct, no damage can be done to it and I sit behind it. Zonealarm on my laptop has shown *no* activity in over two years, so I guess I have everything set up properly.

I didn't notice Yvsa, being gone myself.

I still have dial up- no high speed here yet, satellite problematic. What dial up means with BladeForums new 'improvement's is it takes twice as long to navigate around- because there's more stuff to load. All those icons and avatars and junk cost. I'll start reading a thread and have it jump to the top on me- two or three times. This is very annoying.

When I was still online via telephone at slow connect (went from 14.4 to cable), I always did my stuff with images turned off. I rarely needed to see pictures and when I did, I just clicked on the pic to download it. It made being online less painful as text is lightening quick...

So far, so good, this morning. I went to the Yahoo address and have no email listed there and with my settings there isn't supposed to be any. I'll see how today goes and if everythings alright I'll go to the ZA Forums and let 'em know what the fix is.:)

Yvsa, glad things worked out. I've had simmaler problems on my computer before, so I refuse to upgrade some of my software. Been running Windows 98 SE on this computer with these drivers since August 2000, and I refuse to upgrade. Still running IE5.0 which came with 98SE and don't plan to upgrade. Last time I did, I had to reinstall Windows from scratch to fix the problems. I figure that if it works, keep it!

Thanks Heber.:) It's just that ZA has been so dependable and steady over the years I've had it that I sure wasn't expecting a hiccup. Before I upgrade it again I'll wait until the fix comes out AND I will be damned sure to keep the current version installer I have right now just in case.:D

Hey Yvsa,
Welcome back. It's been so cool here (mid 70's) that I'm gonna make your Chile Verde recepe tomorow. It is soooo good. :D

I wish I'd read this earlier, I use Zonealarm Pro and it was screwing up my PC too. They put out a new patch, but it doesn't seem to be working much better.

OldVersion.com

"Because newer is not always better."

Here is a site that I gave a friend who builds computers, and he was very happy to have it. Visit it and if it sounds good, make it a favorite or bookmark it.

The only thing I have running is a linksys router (with old firmware). I run my anti virus about 2 times a month and never find anything. I run spybot and adaware less than that and will "maybe" find 3 things in the registry. The only computer in my house that ever has any problems is my dads and I think most of that is user error. I think that using opera instead of IE helps with security a lot since no one attacks it. And it has built in pop-up blocker and never asks "if I want to trust www.XXXXXXX.com"

See...the younger guys here have it all figgured out...they have grown up with these here 'puter thangs...

I use Mozilla browser and get no popups or adware junk. I reverted to Zonealarm 4.5 and things seem ok for now. Thanks for the oldversion.com link, that is a great site.
If you have trouble with Windows Media Player, I recommend "Media Player Classic" which is old version 6.4 with some new things added- kept as a lightweight program that only does what you tell it to...

rigged again, Yvsa! Everyone knows that machines make life easier, right? We're just a -zippin in the 21st C. aren't we? [I'm still waiting for the delivery of my Eagle spaceship from "Space 1999"];)

Router is the way to go. Nasty stated it well.

I unplug and power down my external modem when not in use. On cable modems, you get pinged all the time by folks just searchin fer a machine to mess with.

MBE do you save the downloads to disc or just open them from the site? I was always told to save them to my disc and now I see the value of that even if you do have to go clean out the old install files now and then.:)
I keep them in My Documents in a Computer Download file and then have subfiles in there for each different process. Sure glad I had the previous upgrade this time!
