Hi guys.

I want to turn an old cheap chinese bali like knife into something that would look like a bar ninja.

The blade I have is from a Jaguar bali, already dulled since it was a trainer (one of the handle broke after a few months... surprise).

Here is my question: I want to grind the blade to be able to open beer bottles. Should the "hook" of the opener be thicker than the spine?

I just hesitate on wich side of the actual blade will be the spine of the opener. I'm affraid that if the bottom hook of the opener is too thin it will break.

What do you guys think about it?

Learn to use a cigarettelighter to open beerbottles ;)
With pracitce you can pop the lit off a few feet away :p

Not as fun.

Also, I don't smoke and I now have a firesteel to light the fire...

Come on, it's just a reason to make a bali-like object I can carry all the time :P

That would be a nice conversation piece at parties, but what the cops think when you have it in your pocket? I could dig a novelty like that. but, I think you might not have something to work with either way since the blade is ground. I mean, you have a thick hook, and there is not much material on the backside of ht ehook, and if you go the other way around you have thin material on the hook. I dunno. When you look at most other bottle openers they are same thickness all the way till the tip of the backside of the hook.

I turned a broken knife into a bottle opener once.
I used the thin side under the lip, worked fine.

I Like the Bali opener Idea.

Hmmm... A balisong bottle opener sounds about like a switchblade comb, at least as far as the cops would react to the sight of it. :D Pick your poison.

Want to see how real men opened beer bottles? I'll bet I'm the only one here who fondly remembers a good, old movie called Donovan's Reef. It starred John Wayne and Lee Marvin, as well as other old standbys. Now, in that movie Lee Marvin's character puts on a real display of opening beer bottles the manly way on the edge of the bar with a smack from his hand!

Since I'm not that "manly" I'll just continue to use my Vic SAK.

I thought the real MANLY way to open beer bottles was with your eyebrow and lower eye socket?! Wasnt that in Animal House? Cant remember where I saw that one.

just smash the neck of the beer against the anvil and chug that nectar near the roaring flames..:D

Why not just make a bottle opener from some flat stock, and throw away the old blade.

Because all I have is a hand drill, not a drill press. And when balis pivots are not perfectly straigth, the flipping sucks. Also, I recycle something that is useless.

And for the legal thing, I always have a EDC anyway.

Thanks for the help guys.

Another thing I have to add: I don't have a lot of tools. All I'll be using that is electric is a hand drill, the rest is a hacksaw, files and sandpaper.

Thankyou Thankyou, i have been planing to make a bali but theyre illegal here so was just going to make a trainer blade but now i think i will borrow your idea and make something a little more usefull.
Have a look at a SAK bottle opener, theyre not that thick at the little hook part.

brett

My idea of a great bottle opener is the cute bartendress on the other side of the bar. A bottle opener don't get any better than that!!

make it THIS side of the bar... on your lap, wearing very little, while the clubs lighting is very discreet ;)
